in work i have been asked to impliment a solution that will backup a couple of directories directly onto a NAS box.

I was looking for something like backup exec to do it but it wont backup the directories in a way that are accessable if the main machine goes down.

anyone else got any experience with this sort of thing ?

Little more info required, what do you mean by the directories aren't accessable if the main machine goes down?

Which type NAS are you using?

I presume you are talking about using the automatic backup utility in windows that zips everything as it is being backed up.

Have a look at sync toy. It preserves the folder structure.

basicly we have a windows 2003 server with a number of shared folders,

i would like a solution that will mirror the contents of the shared folders on the nas box, so in the event of the server crashing. the users can switch their mapped drives over to the nas box while the server issue is being resolved.

it will probably be a buffalo tera station nas box

You are looking a shadow server then.

You could just do a daily/nightly back up using backup exec or xcopy in dos. (this I do at my work) We use a Shad and a Nas. The nas is for back up the shad is for real time backup so you can use it if the live one goes down. Essential ino our business.

Im not to sure what other ways there are for creating a shadow server but if you google it im sure you will find something.
Also a nas box cant be a live shadow you will need a shadow server and then a nas if you are processing o it. If it is just drive storage you can :)

    EDIT

after looking there is loads of software out there for shadow servers. Some even free. But if it was me I would use a known brand. I cant suggest the one we use as it is BSpoke for our company.

    Hope this helps!

I have used synctoy and found it to be really good. I use a dns323 with a couple of 500gb drives and synctoy on the local machine.

Backup Exec will list the tree under dates and will really only restore it is not usefull for live access. Backup Exec is more DRecovery.

Let me know what you go for.
