Name for the soft part of the back of the knee

    Hi all,
I can assure you that I'm not trolling or taking the piss here.

I'm wondering if anyone has the proper name for the soft part at the back of the knee, where the calf stops but the thigh hasn't begun yet. Also to clarify, I'm talking about the external part, not the internal.

The best I've some up with is 'anterior patellar aspect', but that sounds more like the back of the actual knee cap and not a part of the leg at all. And may well be incorrect anyway as I'm guessing.

I've talked to two radiologists and they came up blank.

    Thanks in advance.

The anterior aspect of the patella would be at the most superficial part of the kneecap, on the anterior (front) side of the knee.

The popliteal fossa is the sorta diamond-shaped depression at the back of the knee between the heads of your calf muscles, hamstrings and part of your quadriceps

    As above - popliteal fossa

This was my standard response for years to the kiddie question "you know what..." i.e. I know there's no proper name... uUntil my god child said yes there is - it's the knee pit ! (Or Knee - bow !)
    Poplliteal fossa it is then...
