Datsun 280Z dies, looks like it was in good shape beforehand too, cant understand why they would crush it like that, surely scrap isnt worth that much?

I think the going rate now is €40 per car, although in the States it's probably higher. Nevertheless, if the owner sold the shell, he would have made more money on it.

Funny that this particular topic of scrap steel costs should come up, because around my area, there was a Nissan Cherry N12 and a Mazda 323 Mk2 sitting in driveways of houses for years (both were Irish cars), until recently (maybe about a year ago). They were probably sold for scrap aswell. What a shame. :(

More than likely, seems to be the way these days, alot of 80s cars get scrapped because no one wants them, they are in limbo land, not worth anything and years away from the tax exemption...

Indeed. Even look at cars from the early/mid 90's now. We have a Mk1 Mondeo from new. Before you would see them on every street corner, now you can go a few days or even weeks without seeing one. And it isn't because they break down, or even rust, their only crime is being a few years old.

Why would you put that here? Do you want to make me cry??

That is the car I want. When I get my Golf's to the standard I want them a 260z is next, or if I can find/afford one a 280z

Apologies for upsetting you,i put it there because i couldnt understand why anyone would crush a seemingly good car like that, especially when they are such rare beasts?

Yeah,iv seen a lot of them scrapped at my local scrappy,as you said, its because they are old,not because anything might be wrong with them.I have noticed that there is less and less of them around, seems strange because its not so long when they were new,i remember what car magazines launch of it,they gave away a free video(which i still have )with jackie stewart driving the car and extolling its virtues, including the pen holder down by the gearstick:P,doesnt seem like that long ago...
You may laugh at me now,but they will be a rare car in time..:)

I remember you could win a Mondeo Mk1 if you paid you ESB bill on time back in the early 90's! :D

Another car that is becoming increasingly rare on the roads in the Opel Vectra A / Vauxhall Cavalier Mk3.

Yeah , I think the lack of these older cars (sierra , mondeo , peugeot 405 opel astra mk 1 et)c) has something to do with the Celtic Tiger (remember him again he is now not to be seen or heard. I have always noticed that in the UK or France you will see loads of cars over 15 years old driving around perfectly. However anything more than ten years here is destined for the scrap heap. Many of these are being replaced by more sophisticated electronic yokes that when they break down will cost an arm and a leg.
    Bring back the oldies !!!

I think the ST200 (MkII) would be well worth saving, or even an ST24, or better again the 4x4 model.

Mine is a humble 1.8 TD LX. After 203k miles of flawless service I think i'll just spray it with waste oil and put it in storage when its time finally comes to be taken out of daily service.

Yep,because if you sell it it will be crushed before very long regardless of its condition....:(

Unfortunately true, same reason why I kept my Micra instead of selling it on (no one would probably buy it anyway! :p)

I've noticed that also.In my Home town I have actually found myself looking around for vectra mk 1/cavalier 3mk.There is one vectra, one cavalier and one Opel kadett in active use around my town I reckon.
They are the only one's I see regularly(or at all:eek:).Cortina's are now extinct I have also noticed.
    Heartless consumerism is the problem.

One more thing,if any of ye have ever been in Bulgaria you would have noticed that Opel Kadets and Ladas are the most common cars on the streets! The difference is amazing.
