The internet is alive with "information leaks" relating to an iPhone Nano launch soon, well in time for Christmas:

    From Zdnet.com:
About this time a year ago rumors began circulating about a smaller nano-sized iPhone. The UK’s Daily Mail has resurrected the rumor again, just in time for the holiday shopping season:

The product will be launched in the UK at up to £150 for pay-as-you-go customers by O2, the mobile phone group owned by Spain’s Telefonica. ‘This will be a big one,’ said an industry source.

A Flickr picture posted in January (below) claims that the iPhone nano will have a 2.75-inch screen (compared to the iPhone’s 3.5-inch), MultiTouch and come in 4 and 8GB capacities. One downside to the Flickr concept, is that it doesn’t come with Internet access and uses a T9 software keypad - just like the Prada.

While it stands to reason that Apple is exploring ways to expand the iPhone’s penetration into lower-cost markets, I can’t image them shipping any iPhone without Internet access.

CNet’s Crave blog expects to see another iPod event at Apple in September and points to iLounge’s rumor of a re-designed, taller iPod nano and a memo sent to Apple’s channel partners regarding shortages of iPods and MacBooks for the next 30 days.

Sounds like nonsense. It would be near impossible to use the keyboard on the iphone if it were any smaller..

Also your source is the Daily Mail :)

I can't see Apple launching an iphone without internet access

    ha.. love the concept photo.

Yeah... they'll make the phone smaller but keep the icons the same size... that makes sense.

It says it would use a T9 software keyboard.

Doesn't that mean it would use number keys like on a normal phone. A 1-9 keypad with three letters on each key would probably still fit on the smaller screen.

Below is the Daily Mail source, but sites were saying it before the Daily Mail article which only came out yesterday. :p

Apple is about to launch a 'nano' version of the hugely successful iPhone. It is expected to be in the shops in time for Christmas.
The product will be launched in the UK at up to £150 for pay-as-you-go customers by O2, the mobile phone group owned by Spain's Telefonica. 'This will be a big one,' said an industry source.
Must-have: The nano version of the iPhone is expected to outstrip sales even of the original
'The iPhone 3G has been the fastest-selling phone ever in the UK, but it is too expensive to be a realistic proposition in the pay-as-you-go market.

I agree it would probably fit nicely. Plus, a few people have been looking for a T9 keyboard, would be good for all those qwerty haters and young kids.

Looks like they've just copied the rumour from a bout a year ago. That rumour turned out to be bull in the end.

It may be something that is being worked on though, but don't expect it that soon.

Just came across this rather interesting but obviously unlikely roundup:

I'd imagine it is only a matter of time before they do bring out something like this.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like a small phone (without any bells/whistles/cameras etc) with built in iPod nano for sane money, surprised they have not brought it out already.

I suppose they tried this with the Motorola RokR, which didn't work, hence the release of iPhone. So I think it's VERY likely they will release a smaller, cheaper model. Remember they want to grasp as many customers from each market as possible, and this is not going to happen with a contract only iPhone, especially since pay as you go accounts add for more than half of phone subscribers worldwide.

This is a bit long, but bare with me...
Seems like O2 forums are hinting at something happening on October 1st:
    taken from http://forums.o2online.ie/forums/showthread.php?t=653
O2: The recurring charges are up to you. Which priceplan you sign up to would determine this. For example, the iphone 175 priceplan is €45 a month. You cancellation fee would be €45 for the 18 month period. So the fee in total would be €810. Add the cost of the handset to this, we'll say the 8GB which is 169,meaning you're paying €979... for a phone.

Hold off on it. You never know what might be around the corner.

    Somebody else replied:

Customer: Seems like you know something we dont know can you give us a timeframe?

    Upgrading
Existing iPhone customers can upgrade to the new device, taking advantage of the same great deal as new customers until 1st October.

Customer: Hmm. i wonder on Oct 1st will we get a new announcement :P
Customer: Hmm. i wonder on Oct 1st will we get a new announcement :P
O2: We'll have to wait until October first. We'll all find out at that stage.

It's always little things liek this that end up hinting at something big to follow. Now we just need more pieces of the puzzle to put together.

Well the 3G iPhone is coming out on pay-as-you-go on o2 in the UK in time for Christmas anyway. If Android phones aren't out by then i'll buy one and unlock it and use it with 3.

There hasn't been much talk about Android lately has there?

The iPhone 'nano' will eventually happen. Doubtful that it'll happen in September though. Both the iPhone and iPhone 3G were announced at least a month before release.

how do people get worked up about shots like that.

it's obivious it's not an apple product

    1. the home buttons square is too "bolded"
    2. it's also off centre.
    3. not to mention the non-OSX UI.

and i only looked at it for 20 seconds.

I reckon this was a Asian copy of the original iPhone.

Kinda funny, anyone into Apple product's (not just iphone and ipod's) will tell you that there are always rumors about what's about to be released, I wouldn't hold my breath to be honest.
