Keyboard cover for laptop?

I've used keyboard covers for my laptop for a couple of years, and once saved it from a coffee spill by some fool who splashed on it. But these pre-made covers are a bit expensive over time for a starving student, and wear out pretty fast with all my keyboarding for university, chats, emails, and surfing.

I was wondering if any of you have used plastic wrap to cover your keyboard, the kind used to wrap food before refrigerating it? I spoke with one student engineer, who claimed that it might be cause for static electricity, which could be harmful to my screen? What say you?

effect of static on an LCD? Id have no idea. What was his Engineering discipline? I took a course on compter graphics and the only thing I can say about LCD is it works through electricity: im not even sure what effect a magnet has on it.

Anyway cling-film sounds like a really fugly hack.. Dell USA lists their plastic pre-form covers for as little as $15. Its really not that much. Student-Trans: 2-3 drinks.

I was in the market for this too (I'm always munching away at my laptop :o). but just be careful, I'm not sure if it's the same with all Dells, but the return key on the UK machines is bigger than the US machines, it's 2 lines high instead of one if you get me. All the silicone keyboard protectors seemed to be made for the US one :(

I did find some "universal" ones, but I wouldn't be too confident of their fit.
