I'll be emigrating soon, so the time has come for me to get rid of my lovely self built gaming PC and buy a laptop instead...

I guess my budget will be around €1200-€1500, and for that I'd like to get something that'll run new release games with decent amounts of eye candy. (I'll be using it for other stuff, but as long as it performs well in games it should be adequate for all of my needs)
Vista Home Premium would be my OS of choice, and at least 2GB ram to go with it obviously...
250GB+ of storage as well, and possibly a bluray reader (not all that necessary though)

I really want to get as much grunt for my cash as possible, so hopefully you guys can help me out here:)

when you emmigrate will you be mobile or relatively stationed? for the cost, you could ship it (about, 200e - ouch I know: but even cheaper if you carry some of the components in your suitcase and ship a lighter Case) and power translation isnt an issue at all with the PSU.

For performance go with Vista 64-bit and 4gb ram. Thats well within that budget. Game performance wise you won't be unstoppable godlike and/or monsterkill but you will have a killing spree for a while: that kind of moxy comes after the 2 grand range when you start hitting Laptops with SLi (really bad on the battery life though - playing on low settings does so much for battery life)

^^ why not buy a laptop where you will emmigrate. Most of the places will be cheaper than buying a laptop here.

Hmmmm... I'll be moving to London so I guess with the exchange rate being so favourable, I would be wiser to hold off on buying it until I'm over there.
I'd really love to bring my pc with me, but there's a high chance that my job will involve lots of travel, so a laptop will be a must.
Suppose I could always keep my desktop and just buy a cheapish laptop instead...

A laptop that will be able to do all that is going to be a heavy, power-hungry bastard. I'd ship the PC over (got a car? ferry it across! :)) and get a lightweight laptop/netbook.

Stephen's correct, a well to do gaming laptop is not light. My own is a light-gaming laptop and its already in excess of 8 pounds (without the cable and battery). Real gaming solutions will be a fair bit heavier.
