Why the hell have AWear decided to have a revamp and hike up their prices??

I went in there today just to get a vest - a simple vest! I usually get them for between €8-10 but today the cheapest one was €15!!

Am I going mad or has this always been the way and I just happened to get bargains each time I went in??

I haven't bought anything out of A-Wear in years, not since Brown Thomas bought them and the clothes became boring as hell.

That's a joke putting up their prices considering their clothes are of poor quality!

Yeah I used to be mad into A-Wear and would be buying stuff nearly every week but for the past while, everytime I've gone in, I've walked back out within 60 seconds cause I see NOTHING that sparks my interest even a little bit. I didn't know BT had bought them out, but makes sense now.

The new layout looks nice though, changing rooms are nice and all.

After all this giving out, I did actually buy something in A-wear last week; two pairs of jeans, the Fit&Flare ones, and they are the best jeans I've tried on in a good while!

I think they just need to get a bit more imaginative, maybe get some fresh eyes/designers to jazz it up a bit.

    BT don't own them anymore.

I was in there last week and everything just looked dull and boring.

i was just thinking recently their clothes seem more expensive. i tried on a tshirt last week - it was a bit fancier than a basic tshirt, bit of silver on it & some ruffles at the bottom - was expecting it to be 15-20 euro but it was closer to 30, think it was 26. it definitely seems more expensive than it used to be.

Their jeans are pretty fab though and at €35 are decent value imho.

I haven't bought anything in a-wear in years and I used to buy t-shirts and skirts in there fairly frequently.

Awear are good for trousers for short legged people.
The Chinese government have brought in certain regulations because of the Olympics meaning labour is more expensive, also their currency is very weak against the USD, meaning the cost of buying the clothes is going up and the price has to be passed on to the customer.

I noticed their prices have gone up a lot too. In my opinion, their clothes are definitly not worth it. They are very poor quality and the only saving grace was the low price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭fuzzywiggle

They've definitely put their prices up. Any top i pick up in there is €25. For plain enough tops. And then you think if i want 2 tops from awear it's €50.. what??

Thank God for all these replies! I thought I was going mental!

I got a few things years ago in Awear that were so reasonable and recently I got a few things on sale that I wouldn't've paid full whack for. The quality of the clothes is definitely not worth the price. Most times I walk around it and out again! :p Even the jewellery is quite dear for some pieces, especially when you could get something similar cheaper like in New Look or that :)

I thought Bt brought in A wear? I know they were recently sold. I thought the idea of a wear is to have cheaper imitations of BT style that doesn't really last. I picked up a plain dress in there recently for 50euro-bit of a shock alright! They seem to be trying to get closer to river island and topshop on the sly

I completely agree with all of the above posts.
I used to be a huge awear fan but I think their clothes have gone downhill both in style and quality in the past few months and the prices have definitely risen.

I have some great dresses that I got in A-Wear about four years ago and they're still going strong. They've lasted ages and the cut of them is super quality. I could not imagine anything in A-Wear right now even making it to next year, and for twice the price I might add!

BT don't own them anymore, the prices were put up after BT sold up. I think they're all 'privately' owned now or something, all the shops managers were given the opportunity to buy the shops I think.

Agree with all previous posts. OP if your looking for a simple vest top don't forget about Penny's or New Look half the price and the quality is as good as Awear if not better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭MILF

Ah yeah I'll always be going into Penneys and New Look but I had my eye out for a long vest top thingy and I knew AWear did them but I tell ya, I wont be going in there shopping for a while!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,260 ✭✭✭jdivision

BT sold them to a private equity group as others said, standard practice would be to then bump up prices. They probably don't have the buying power they had when part of Galen Weston's empire - he owns Penneys, BT and Selfridges as well as a number of other retailers - but most of it would be extra profit. Wrong thing to do imo, the bottom end of the market (meaning mass market rather than poor quality) that Awear was just about part of is thriving as is the very top end of the market. It's the midmarket that's suffering and Awear is definitely there now

  • A-Wear is strange, there are some lovely things now and again but the quality and pricing are all over the place. I think they have a cheek charging 15 quid for a vest top that's worse quality than a Penneys one. A lot of the clothes look cheap and shoddily made, but they aren't cheap price wise! Most things I've gotten from there have fallen apart pretty fast, and the jeans always seem to go baggy after an hour of wearing, which is really annoying. If they want to charge 35 euro for things, they'd better sort out the quality, because I can get better in Penneys or Dunnes for a fiver. I'm not too keen on their accessories either, a lot of the jewellery just isn't very nice and looks cheap and clunky. I'm not going to spend 12 quid on a necklace I don't really like when I can get a gorgeous one in Accessorize for 15. A lot of their bags are cheap and plasticky looking as well, and are usually priced at over 30 euro. I know it doesn't sound much but again, other shops do similar bags for under a tenner.

They still have some really nice stuff at reasonable prices - trousers that aren't too long, nice tops, scarves etc, which is why I still go in. But I think if they should get rid of the crappy tracksuits, velour stuff, cheap looking grey marl cardigans and make the whole store a bit more upmarket. I don't mind paying 30-50 euro for jeans, trousers or a jumper, but if I do, I expect reasonable quality, not badly stitched tat. The quality somewhere like Vero Moda or even Zara is much better for a lower price. I still like A-wear, but I think they need to raise their standards if they want to compete.

I used to LOVE Awear, I'd buy things in there nearly every week before, now I haven't been near the place in over a year!

Dorothy Perkins is soooooo much better.

Brown Thomas don't own A-Wear anymore. But A-Wear have been awful for at least 4 years now anyway so...I think they've just gotten progressively worse though.
The quality is on level of (or worse) than Penneys, and at least Penneys are cheap as hell and try to stay up with the current fashion. I've gotten some great vest tops that are similiar to the ones in Abercrombie and Fitch. For 4 Euro!

Unfortunately Penny's clothes are crap quality too. I'd normally buy vests and the odd dress there, and they don't survive more than a couple of washes before going really out of shape or the stitching coming undone. So much for highly skilled Indian seamstresses :p

But yes A-Wear is really dull. I'd only see myself buying clothes there if I didn't work in a company that lets you wear whatever you want to work, as I do now.

The can be a bit hit and miss lately but what really annoyed me was the new woolen wear last winter. Apparently we are no longer allowed to be a 10 or a 12 but instead must be a 10-12 which means that if like me you are a neat 10 (small boobs) then the 10-12 is too baggy but a smaller size is a wee bit tight considering that a cardi or jumper is generally going to be going on over something else!! And I can't imagine it is a great fitting for any one who is a 12 either.

Just annoys me when shops do that and I used to like awears woolies for casual wear!!!!

Im a bit miffed myself re the prices and also the range of clothes.
I recently lost 4 stone and, before, I could never fit into high street clothes (Awear, TopShop etc) and as soon as I could I was shopping there but now I can't afford to!! If it's not one thing it's another!!

I agree with this! I have the opposite problem, large boobs, so a 14-16 is too tight on my chest, but a 16 was perfect!

I go to A-Wear for jeans, but depressing picking up a nice t-shirt with a beaded string on the back for 36 euro. Buy some beads and a Pennys t-shirt and make it for 7 quid instead, it'll probably get destroyed by some fool playing with it when drunk anyway. :pac:

They had nice dresses there a while back....ripped the first night i wore it though!! 20 euro in the dry cleaners to wash it.....just not worth it!!

i used to be a big fan but the prices have gone up and the quality is gone down. id rather go to penneys, H & M and new look now. Last thing I liked in awear was a little silver woolen shrug.....30 euro. are they mad straight back on the rail it went and I got a similar one for five pounds on www.boohoo.com

I was thinking of emailing a link to this thread to my old boss in Awear but I see someone got there before me! :D

So I went out in the vest I originally bought that made me start off this topic on Sat night and got drink spilled on it (as ya do!) so I chucked it in the wash...
The frickin thing has lost all its shape and looks gammy now - 15 F*****G euro that cost me!
As much as the look of the clothes are nice, the quality and the price do not match and I for one AIN'T shoppin in there again.

I was in A-Wear in Newry last week and tried on this cute navy kimono cardigan thing- nearly died when I got up to the till- it was £30! Which is about €38. For an A-Wear cardigan. anyway, stupid me bought it but I'm going to bring it back during the week. Also seen a nice brown shoulder bag on sale- thought it was mayb about £8-10, it was £15! it wasn't worth that.

went into New Look in Newry and bought a gorg waistcoat, short sleeved jacket, 2 going out tops, 1 bracelet (all in the sale) and a new line clutch. The whole lot cost me £21! so not shopping in A-Wear anymore- it's gone really over rated!
