What should I learn?

I'd like to learn how to fight. I'm not interested in anything fancy, so a lot of martial arts stuff doesn't appeal to me. I did aikido for a couple of years, but I felt it wasn't really practical. I did Kenpo for a couple of years when I was a kid, which in hindsight was much more useful than the aikido.

I just want to learn how to fight, so that I can take care of myself if the need arises. Something practical is what I'm looking for. Something that won't take 20 years of practice to be useful.

I'm 6ft and about 175 pounds, I'm in good shape and I lift weights so my strength is good. I'm just mentioning the stats as I reckon there are different styles/self defense methods suitable for different body types.

    Any recommendations?

yeah maybe not the best thing to post on a Martial Arts forum. Probably best going along the lines of boxing if you want to avoid martial arts.

Muay Thai or Boxing - you can't go wrong. :)

The apply a few street smart skills and you're sorted.

If you want to learn how to fight in order to defend yourself, boxing, muay thai or mma is a solid bet for something that's practical and tested.

If you want something totally geared for the street then I'd recommend having a look at the stuff we do (pimping a bit I know;)).

Have a gander at www.urbancombatives.com and if you think it's something you might be into just drop Jon Mackey a line (if you're located in Dublin).

I've not got any unfortunately. Although, I have some footage form the recent work shop that Lee did over here. So I'll try and put some of it up on the site at some point soon. I think Jon has also got bit of footage that will also be going up.

Muay Thai and Boxing are awesome! But what would strategies would you add to these, in order to differentiate between the ring and the street? Or do you think that just having ring craft in enough?

    Cheers,

Ring craft isn't enough for purely self defence purposes IMO. There's no consideration of self defence in the teaching (ignoring self defence in favour of the ring craft is the correct approach of course), though obviously there are self defence applications for what you learn.

What strategies would I add? I dunno tbh. Reading this forum has made me more aware that I should run like f*ck unless I have no other option.

What strategies would you add to muay thai for the street?

Some soft skills like awareness, mental tool box for quickly assessing a situation and coping with the stress (if possible), adapting some of the punches to use the palm, maybe some forearm blows. Train with shoes on etc.

MT has helped me alot when I think Im wrecked and have no more left and you hear the 30 second beeper and your like "only 30 seconds left" and you find that bit more gas. Im aware now that when Im wrecked I can still keep going. Id like to think that I could bring that determination to keep going that Ive gotten from MT into a self defence situation.

That's true... anything physically arduous like that is a great test of ones character.

Two miles even. All the best fighters started off with it.

    Royce Gracie, The Rock etc.

    My Ma would beat him.

    Hes hardly a sports man

    Just a soap-actor/entertainer/clown

Go with some sort of kicking boxing or boxing OP.

The greatest advantage in a street fight, is the ability not to get hit and the ability to take punishment.

A boxer is used to giving and taking shots. He will stay relaxed during the fight and that means more zip to his punches, defensive awareness and less wasted energy, which is not really important as street fights, last what 20 seconds on average?

Join a club and take it slow to begin with, your strength wont be pointless anymore after a few months training, when you will know exactly how to use it and where to hit, a well trained boxer or other trained fighter knows exactly where to aim all his power.

Great skills and it's a very nice art.

But practical? Well, I guess it's like a UFO - I wont believe in it until one lands in my back yard, and I then get a chance to examine an alien corpse.

Um... well, good luck with it anyway.
