    Hi everyone,

I'll be interviewing for a Night Porter job very soon and am a little bit off as to what exactly the job entails.

Could someone give me a quick rundown/description of the particular duties expected of someone in that role.

    Cheers in advance

I used to work as a bar man in a hotel. From what I could see, this is what the night porters did:

    1. Clean the hotel, such a mopping the floor, polishing things.
    2. Move tables and things like that around, e.g. preparing a room for breakfast.
    3. Bring drinks and food up to people's rooms.
    4. Not quite provide security, but watch the door and things like that.
    5. Answer the telephone if it rings.

It seemed like a fairly handy job.

    Depends...........

It can be incredibly difficult and it can be incredibly easy.
Depends if this hotel does functions. If they don’t you can spend a few hours asleep tbh, I’ve done that. But if they do large weddings for example, you could have 100 drunken residents screaming for drink at you and you’ll be refusing and taking abuse.
So check out do they do functions.

The list above shows most of the main tasks. You might not be required to bring drinks to rooms, some hotels don’t allow this. Same goes for food, a 3 star hotel isn’t going to serving food at night or at least the ones I worked in didn’t.

Basically a lot of mopping and cleaning, you’ll definitely be required to clean the lobby and some corridors, possibly the lifts too. Answer the phone too and watch the door. However you’re not a bouncer so if you can’t manage drunken customers then don’t put yourself in danger, call the gardai. Collecting breakfast cards and delivering newspapers and probably have to walk around the hotel every hour for a firecheck. Lots of walking for sure.

Remember, keep the chef's sweet and you'll always get a free breakfast :pac:

Cheers guys, got offered the job pretty much there and then. I accepted as it seems straightforward so to speak. The only thing left is definite wage or salary confirmation.
