Need alternative recommendations to a Samsung series 6

I bought a Sammy Series 6 46in lcd a few weeks ago but am unhappy with it due to its poor display. Now I've put in the recommended settings and updated the firmware but the picture is still not as good as it should be IMO. There's backlight bleed through and a constant (though admittedly faint) bar running vertically through the middle of the screen. DVD upscaling on some films is very good but on others its poor, i.e. Transformers good, miami vice bad (you could say the same about the films themselves!!).

Now I do have the option of returning the samsumg to where I bought it but as I thought it was the best new tv on the market, I'm stumped as to what I should consider as a replacement. The specs I'd want are 46inch, at least 3 hdmi, a new model (i.e. not due for replacement shortly), good reliability and above all, excellent picture. Sony 46w4000, Panasonics and Pioneer have been suggested.

    Any advice appreciated.

Sorry to hear about the series 6 Dave.I always thought that was a great tv under all conditions.Anyway, i would reccomend one of these, Sony 46W4000, Panasonic 46pz80(plasma), Sony 46V4000.The pioneer plasmas are brilliant alright but i dont think the extra black is worth the heavy premium over a similarly specced panasonic. The reason i would suggest that sony 46V4000 is because its a nice bit cheaper than the W4000 which is a very dear 'set.I've seen the W and V in 40" form next to each other in shops and i really couldnt pick out any differences. The W has a slightly nicer design i have to say but in terms of black level and overall sharpness they seemed exactly the same. All of the three are fairly new as well btw, the V4000 is the newest

I just bought a Philips 42pfl9603 and it is stunning. Recent set so not many reviews yet. One here
There is a 47in model but they are expensive.

Murphy's, Princess St, Cork. 1900 euro for 42in and 2400 for 47in. Not a rip off as 42in sells for 1,600 -1800 £sterling in UK.

Dave it is very simple to recommend a replacement for the Samsung....go for the Toshiba 46ZF355DB. This set is very very highly rated and I believe it to be the best on the market from any manufacturer. It has all of the features of the Samsung, and outscored it in most of the reviews I read. I have been tracking this one for ages and am nearly ready to buy it myself! It can be bought here off pixmania for just over €2k excl. delivery.

    Hi,

I received a 40" Series 6 today. The image looks good to my eyes (though I haven't had time to view in detail yet), but just in case I can get it better, I've been searching for details on "recommended settings" or firmware upgrades, etc. -without luck so far.

Can anyone point me to a link on this?

Are you sure thats not just a ground loop problem? Have you tried swapping out the power cable?

Its an old thread as far as I know he got it all sorted with a firmware update and new settings.

I put in new firmware and updated the settings and it did improve the picture but that vertical bar is still there but since I've moved my seating position back from the tv i.e. from 6 feet to 12 feet, its not as noticeable now (failing eyesight has its advantages!!!:D)

Dave sounds like your still not too happy with it. After spending that much money you should be 100% happy

I bought a pioneer plasma 4280xd my self and I have to say all channels on SD Sky look Great. Up scaled DVD look Fab.

No probs what so ever. I would concur with what the others have said here I your budget stretches go for Pioneer 2nd Panasonic 46py80 or one of those 46W4000 sony's.

If your mainly wathing Film's or Regular TV stick with the Plasma. If your gaming or plan on sky HD stick with your Samsung.

    Hi,

We are moving to a new house shortly and need to buy 2 TVs, one for the living room and one for the bedroom. We are interested in buying 42 inch Samsung 6 series but will settle for cheaper option for the bedroom (to be wall hung and the bedroom is big) so what should we go for that would be cheapish but very good quality? And where is the best place for deals to buy the TVs? Its annoying they way Curry's have had their website 'under contstruction' for the past 2 years. Thanks.

Also, what is the best value re SKY packages? Just want Sports and Sky Plus. Is HD extra? Or is what the Tvs have in them enough?

By the way you're talking i assume your looking to go to a bricks n mortar shop to get your tvs.It would be cheaper to buy online but if you have to buy in a shop, really do shop around and set them off against each other to ensure you pay the least money. The samsung series 6 is an excellent tv IMO.Its 40" or 46" btw, not 42".The only 42" tv samsung make is plasma. In a shop i reckon you should be able to get this for not much more than a grand(The 40" series 6 that is)

    Thanks Zonda,

What websites would you recommend? I don't mind where I buy as long as I get a competitive price.
