    hi im looking to buy an old bmw 3 or 5 series probably from the mid '80s ive tried searching the net but i cant find an answer :o,how old does a car have to be when do road tax rates change from normal to classic rates please? is it 25 years or 30 years old?? thanks for any help :confused:

    You could look a bit further back and nab a CSL or very early 6 series (prolly have to shell out 10 k though)

    One owner, appears to have a s/h & at that price, if that mileage is genuine would be buying & storing up for the few years...Time will come & you will have a cracker of a car all for approx €170/180 p.a. tax & ins. Came across my dream car in '03 but too good to walk away from, is an '81 so getting there, as they say time flies...

    It shoud really be dropped to 20 or 25 years, This would result in more cars been driven for longer and would help the environment as less new cars would need to be imported.....anyone got John Gormleys number....would you bounce this idea off him...:cool:

    OP you need to be looking for a 78/79 car at the moment....

    thread here one 78/79 hot hatches....you should start one on luxury cars, wouldn't mind seeing that myself....

    Was posted here a number of months ago that there is a high likelihood of the 30 year rule being changed, with a cut-off year instead. I'd be wary of buying anything later than 1978 myself.

    If that happens i will be extremly p1ssed off,most of my cars are awaiting the 30 year cheapy tax!!:(
