Firstly both my parents are teachers, i live at home which is a five min walk to the college. I'm starting a new degree course this Sep and was wondering if i would possibly be entitled to any sort of mature student grant?

    Anyone with any info? Thanks

ps I've been in college already, i got a pass diploma(cert) then dropped out in 3rd year
the course i plan on doing is in building the last course i did was in computing

    Hi Fighting Irish,

Basically it will depend what level you dropped out at. If you were in the middle of pursuing an ordinary/higher degree, then you will probably have to do a number of years before you can apply for a grant (unless it's been over 5 years since you dropped out) and may possibly have to pay fees for a number of year before too (unless the same thing again). Basically it will depend on how the college and the Council/VEC treats your previous course. It gets messy with the 'ladder' system in place, so really the only people who can let you know one way or another would be the Council/VEC and/or the college itself, unless someone on here knows themselves.

    Hope it all goes well.

Im in identical situation ( dropped out in 2004 years ago from diploma course). I was told by the VEC you have to be at least five years out of college and even if you were claiming social welfare you cant get the back to education allowance if you dropped out. this is from student finance.ie

    Check Previous Study
If you already hold a third level undergraduate qualification, you can only apply for a BTEA to take an equivalent undergraduate course in very exceptional cases. You should contact your local social welfare office to discuss your eligibility before completing an application form.
