    This is just my personal opinion, ok ...so don't get upset.

    The Volvo 340 was a crap car when it was new, it had no redeeming features whatsoever.

    As a used car you had trouble giving it away.

    Just because it is now beyond used and bordering on becoming a classic, I still don't see it appreciating in value.

    I'd say its overall market value is silch ...if you're lucky enough to find an interested buyer that loves them for whatever reason, it's probably worth a few thousand to them ...finding that person though would be difficult.

    Don't know about over here, but if it was in the UK it would cost £300-£400 tops.

    I did look up the VRT on a 1989 340 Variomatic and the Revenue book value was €2K which seemed excessive on a mint £700 car.

    My mate picked up a average 1990 one for £180 about 18 months ago. I borrowed it for a bit of towing as they often seem to come with bars on :D

    Good reliable work horses, but a bit of a heavy car for a 1.4.

    Collector's car? Will be eventually, but not quite all the way there yet. Pity it wasn't a Vario...

    Whilst I agree with most of the rest, the above comment is a bit harsh. They're great for lugging stuff around in and whilst not up to Swedish Volvo standards, the Dutch cars are in my opinion better than some of the dross available at the time. They are also good cars to crash in and have the redeeming feature of RWD.

    Agree with most said. A collector would be far more interested in a CVT rather than a manual. Great condition LHD cars can be had in the Netherlands (where these cars were built) for next to nothing

    That's harsh. They were strong, lasted well, were safe and the variomatic was a unique feature at the time, popular with people of a certain age and oddballs that wanted to drive as fast in reverse as the car could go in a forward direction. Just like all the other DAFs before it :D

    Come to think of it there was a variomatic volvo scrapped in a bog up the mountain near me,it was a volvo 66 or something?

    My brother had a near fatal accident in one of these, after losing the back end on a bumpy bog road. Yes, the passive safety was marginally better than cars in the same class, but I remain convinced that if he had been driving a golf he would not have had the accident at all. Not a safe car, oversteer should not be a feature of a 60bhp car.

    I'd agree with peasant 100%. Compared to - say - a golf or an escort the 340 was cramped, rode poorly, had asthmatic underpowered engines, was thirsty, overweight, had a hideous interior (like being inside a stomach) had no extras and was more expensive. But people saw the nagging safety belt sign and the volvo logo and thought "wow, what a safe car"

    I remember reading somewhere that they are becoming popular in the drifting community. Small, cheap, and RWD.

    By the 80s, most lower end cars would have been FWD. Most people learned to drive in a FWD car and had little or no experience in driving a RWD. Any relatively inexperienced driver (with little or no experience with a RWD car) could have been in for a nasty surprise in any RWD car, especially in the wet.

    Anyway, in the interest of your brothers' safety, I'm glad he has moved up to a 00s 5 NCAP star FWD car. Oh wait. :D

    @carchaeologist - good find!
