Hi there i'm looking for some advice on possible IT courses. Just for record i'm 27 and been working in a dead end job for almost 10 years and have finally had enough.Time to do something about it or either slash my wrists. I'm due to start a part-time degree course soon marketing /event management and was thinking of going on to a degree in business information systems too. I have no previous experience with IT,dont even have a ECDL :( just a keen interest in learning more about it. Would a degree like this be beyond a begineer ? Not sure if i would like to specialise in a particular area if anything maybe networks but mostly any good industry standard general certification that would look attractive to employers. Any help or advice would be great for this total begineer. Thanks

no harm in expanding your capabilities even if it doesn't lead to a new job / promotion straight away.

You'll really need to check into the Business Information Systems, and see if there's a (recommended) minimum requirement.
Just did a quick search on Business Information Systems, there's a 4 year course in Galway, so you may want to check into how in-dept the course you want to do is. In general (college) courses will assume you have no knowledge of computing and will start from scratch, some even offering basic skills classes.

Your best bet is to talk to someone running the course and tell them what your current skills are and ask would the course suit you, or would the pace be fast from the get go.

You got as far as getting signed up for a forum and posting, you seem to have basic computer skills, so I'd say you wouldn't be too bad starting a computing course of some sort.

With regards the ECDL, forget about not having it, all it teaches is how to use word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, internet browsing, etc... It doesn't teach you had to maintain your computer, what to do if something goes wrong etc.. all in all do you really want to drive your computer? :P

Saying that, what exactly do you want from the IT side of the course? Do you want to be able to use the above mentioned? Or do you want a more technical aspect of computing/computers?

There is a open day coming up in the college DBS that i'm starting soon so i will ask about the information systems course. I would like to use the elements of the course you mention to supplement any new job or promotion that will hopefully come along down the line. In saying that i am into the more tech side aswell and would be into building/modding and maintaining systems. After a bit of research network admin does stand out to me this would require a ccna though i believe ? thanks again.
