    +1

It needs to be moved. I'd like to see it in the Science section, won't happen though :pac:

i support this move aswell, just wondering why do ya not think it will be moved

Mostly because people see the economics field in the same place as physics was in the last 19th and early 20th century. A lot of predictions, not much results. People feel it's more an Art than a Science.

I think moving it to soc will result in an influx of conspiracy theorists and people wanting to vent (without much room for discussion) about recessions (the ubiquitous "armchair economist"). But, the forum does need more posters so maybe that wouldn't be so bad.

Dont get me started on these guys, i work tills in a supermarket and people never shut up about inflation and interest rates, etc. Wouldnt bother me but they couldnt even tell ya a proper definition of inflation if you asked them

    I support the move.

Being in Biz>Personal>Economics feels like living in Offaly.

    Do you approve?

Yes. I really don't see why Economics should be in Biz.

Yeah, if I recall correctly we asked for it to be moved from the very start.

Bah, it should be in science, why did we say Soc. Batten down the hatches, armchair economists incoming

    Wow, I feel so proud.

Don't worry, once we establish ourselves here we can start campaigning for a move to science.

One step at a time, my boy, one step at a time.

Misery loves company, and we are the dismal science.

Besides, try and see it as an oppurtunity to educate people, and undo some of the damage that pop economists have done.

Aye, it will be a challenge though. Maybe the fact that on the same day as the move to Soc, the announcement that inflation dropped from 5% to 4.4% also occurred. Good sign I guess.

Ultimately, it was my call to move it to Soc rather than Science.

Why? Ultimately because, although it is a science, it's also a highly topical subject with a lot of relevance to society. It could logically be argued that economics is the de facto purpose of a modern society.

Ultimately, I figured that this is the place that I'd look for it, and that I'd expect others to look for it. I think it's the best place for it to gain traffic (which is the purpose of a discussion forum), whereas it would have been the red-headed stepchild in Science.

I'd suggest that it live here for a while, and we'll see how it goes. If it turns out that it makes more sense for it to be in Science, we can look at moving it again.

It doesn't belong beside forums like "Personal Issues", "Lesbian Gay & Bisexual", "World War II", and "Stuttering Stammering & Speech disorder". Not that I have anything against those forums, it's just they have zero, to very little, correlation to one another. It just looks like the Soc category is kind of a jumble of everything. But, it is better than Biz -> Personal
whereas it would have been the red-headed stepchild in Science.
Haha! That was actually quite funny, I'll have to quote it some time.

Such is the phrase: 'beaten like a ginger stepchild'

Well, yeah, but it also contains Accomodation & Property, Legal Discussion, Infrastructure, and of course Politics and its offspring.

In other news, I just realised that I used the word "ultimately" three times in my previous post. I think I need a brisk walk...

See, I'd think that topical armchair discussion of economics belongs in the Politics/Accom forum where really what's being discussed is the political/public implications of a particular figure.

This forum on the other hand should really be more about discussing economics for the sake of discussing economics in my opinion.

But none of those are sciences and all of those are more about the "popular" side of things than the technical for the most part.

Soc is better than Biz though, so I won't complain too loudly. ;)

And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for

Basic idea is to split the discussion in two. The new Irish Economy forum will take over for the more popular stuff leaving this place hopefully for more serious discussion with the middle ground being present in both forums. :)

    I'd like to say this:

nesf: i'll miss debating the finer points of the Austrian school with you (i think deflation in a recession iis worth trying, at least once).

Economist Monitaire: i'll mis the stats you provide.

Flamed Diving: how does it feel to be returned to a second tier forum? I guess you will always, deep down in your heart, wonder whether your analysis was better than an "armchair economist"'s point of view. I guess you'll never know.

One day you will prove to me that economics is a science. On that same day, I will also agree with you. I'm confident that neither will ever come to pass.

I really have missed my calling as a lobbyist.

    It feels amazing. Absolutely amazing.
