XP won't boot

I've a PC running XP. Problem is, when I turn it on, it goes as far as the Dell Splash Screen and no further. By that, I mean the screen that appears as soon as you boot up and has the F2 =Setup F12=Boot Menu.

I don't believe the PC is even detecting the keyboard. I tried taking it out and restarting the machine to see if that would be detected. No luck.

I can't get near the BIOS - it's not set up to boot from CD from what I can see.

How long are you giving it - it may be looking for something like a removable storage that was attached when it was shut down but was since removed?

I'm giving it plenty of time. It's stopping at that screen that comes up as soon as I turn it on. I did have a removable hard drive on it earlier that's going in the bin because it kept coming up with errors. It's not picking up the keyboard at all.

I'd put the removable drive back in and try again

I've just tried that. No luck :(

Does it beep at all when you boot?

Try pressing the Num Lock key to see if it lights up. If not - when the machine is booting - unplug the keyboard and plug it back in to see if it works.

Is the power on in the house? ;)

Is it a USB keyboard? It may not have loaded USB support. If you can get a PS2 keyboard and access the boot menu with that you may get in with an XP CD

Won't be able to get my hands on a PS2 keyboard til next week. And yes, the power is on

PC does beep when it turns on - just the standard short beep that it always does. No error codes or anything like that.

Maybe you could try a manual bios reset see if that helps.

The problem's just solved itself. I opened up the PC, took out the RAM and put it back in again, poked at a couple of cables and tried one more time. Happy Days. :D

Thanks to y'all who gave me suggestions.

And yes, I've changed the boot priority in the BIOS :o
