Mileage rate reduction

I'm with my company 18 months. I signed a contract with a certain mileage rate written into it. Now under standardisation they want to half it, when petrol is going up!! Anyway I have queried this and they are willing to raise my basic by the amount of the reduction, but as this is now taxable it still represents a 25% decrease in my take home, as I lose half to tax? Now I have to decide to accept or fight to get the actual loss plus tax to my take home added to my basic.
Have I a leg to stand on? Anyone any ideas or opinions?
