Beginning knitting for men

I am thinking of learning to knit. Problem is that all knitting books have projects for women.

Can anyone recommend a good book to learn to knit that is not so ... Feminine?

I am not sure how committed I will be, so where can I buy inexpensive supplies to give it a try?

Well done you! Knitting is great -relaxing and Patons do a good range of knitting patterns, simple sweaters for guys. If you want to buy cheapo yarn, try the pound shops, I've often seen balls of yarn in there -if you just want to try out different stitches, it will be ok to do them baby pink or yellow haha

I think the woman that wrote Stitch'n'Bitch also wrote a knitting book with men's projects.

ETA: oops, hadn't noticed the above post! The Stitch'n'Bitch series is a great one, the illustrations in the books are lovely and clear, and the projects easy to follow. So if you go for that one you won't be disappointed.

I saw the stitchnbitch book for men too and it looks good, i saw it in shops and in my local library so you could try your local one?

Knitting is a great thing - you can watch TV while you do it, talk to people while you do it and even ignore people and enter your own little bubble on public transport - altho' you do may get some funny looks (even as a female) you may also have some nice exchanges.

There are a few online sites for men, mostly American. (Some with quite a gay angle - this isn't a negative judgment just an observation.)

As far as books go I was given Stitch 'n' Bitch when I started knitting as an adult but have knitted more out of "Mason Dixon Knitting"

They have a lot of household stuff and their log-cabin blankets are so easy and yet so impressive

Elizabeth Zimmerman is THE grand master or mistress of the two needles, and her book "Knitting without tears" has been the bible of a generation.

I admit I haven't actually read it but I have another of her books and it's just down to earth get on and do it without any of the pseudo feminist recognising knitting as a valid pastime rubbish.
