Can anyone suggest anywhere nice but not too expensive to stay and things to do etc? Going to head up there this evening or tomorrow perhaps on a whim.

Just back from the Manor House Hotel near Killadeas, Enniskillen, Fermanagh. Beautiful place, great setting and lots to do. Good deals going at the moment.

the coast on the northeast around newcastle and the mourne mountains is really nice, as is the obvious one of the giant's causeway

Newcastle, Castlewellan, Portaferry, Donaghadee, Bangor. They are all in Co Down and are nice places for a short stay. Most are coastal as well. Very scenic areas.

Agree on the Enniskillen one also. Anywhere down near the lakes in Fermanagh is lovely.

Portrush is beautiful as well. It'll prob be the furthest away for you.
