Hi. I'm hoping to set up a small GPS tracking system to monitor the movement of up to ten gps units. I'm not sure as to what I need to set this up, do i just need ten transmitters and a receiver or is there more to it? Is it an expensive task to do?

I am a computer programmer so hopefully the technical side won't be beyond my grasp. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

    More details please!

    Some questions
What are you tracking (vehicles, goods etc)?
The distance involved? I assume its over a large area.
    Do you want live tracking?

GPS units only receive data so if its a vehicle on the road you would have to transmit the data back, you could do this using the GSM/3G network. You then have to store the data and display it using Google Maps for example. You could store the data and download the data when the vehicles return to base. If you want to do route replays or alerts for speeding etc you will have quite a bit of work ahead of you.

There are a few companies offering these services such as Fleetmatics. Probably a lot easier and you could be up and running a lot quicker with lots of extra features.

It's for tracking animals. I want to monitor the distance walked and direction of movement. It doesn't have to be displayed on a map, I'm just looking for the raw data, and I do want it live

You might get an idea of whats required here

    http://www.followgb.co.uk/

It looks pricey enough but there is a unit that sends live info to your gprs phone.
May not be supported in Eire.
