That is probably duty on the clothes that you bought from outside the EU and they paid it on your behalf and want it from you now, they will hunt you down.

they can bring you to court if you don't pay it.

and you do owe it if goods were bought outside the EU.

I think the point is why would you put off the inevitable? It's the kind of behaviour you would expect from someone who ignores the ESB bill until it comes in a red envelope and hides behind the sofa to avoid the gas man. You owe the money, why not just pay up now? I would certainly make sure you know the duty rates before you order any more.

They'll send you a reminder. They did to me. I had the cash to pay then so I did.

    Everyones happy.

They'll pass the debt onto a debt collector most likely, they are in the business of extracting money so they'll try harder.

I've a bit of experience with this.
First time round I got something from Fed Ex and there was 12 euro something VAT owed and a 5 euro Fed Ex fee payable + VAT on the fed ex fee.
I didnt feel that this was too bad, given that the handling charge was <50% of the tax.

Roll on my next purchase, about $100 worth from the US. 4 euro 37 cent or something under a fiver anyway was due as VAT and something crazy like a 12 Euro fee + 21% vat on the 12 Euro fee.
Anyway I felt that this was ridiculous I was being charge something close to 3 times the tax in order to pay the tax.

Sooo, I paid the VAT amount due - but not their fee, being a good citizen and all - I have no problems paying my taxes.
Anyway, long story short they passed it onto their debt collectors in the UK, I left it go 2 letters or so and paid them. About a week later I got a further letter threatening more argro, I rang / emailed them & tore strips off and didnt hear any more about it.

In the aftermath of all this I contacted Comreg & queried the fees, and apparently they (an import agent) can charge up to 25 euro to handle the transaction. I think that this is a ridiculous level for an administration charge and that it shouldnt be more than 5 euro or so at the very least.

I felt that by at least causing them some hassle I would cost them some of their exorbitant fee & get some value for money at least. A friend warned me that they could ruin my credit rating or some such if I didnt pay up but I'm not too sure if that's based on any element of truth or not.

Pay the vat and duty amount, don't pay the 'Fed Ex Admin Charge' imo. Fúck that.

That's exactly what I did, their debt collectors hounded me for the 12 euro or whatever the feck it was.
They're legally entitled to charge it, that's the problem, Comreg should be lobbied to have the allowed fees reduced drastically.
I just dont get anything shipped via FedEx any more, mind you, just looking at the one I paid this week to UPS - 13.50 + 2.84 VAT on 54.79 VAT

I think the only option is to ship via the postal services only (No Courier Companies) and lobby Comreg to have the allowable charges reduced.

Me too, I just ignored them. I think their debt collectors company is just an extension of them tbh, not sure.

Agreed, it's a joke. I ended up not bothering to contact comreg (didn't really know who best contact), I got lazy and didn't bother, but I have encouraged others not to pay it.

True, I've ordered a couple of things from America - you are often nott told who it will be shipped with. I suppose you could enquire - perhaps I will in the future.

I received a Vat/Duty invoice from DHL, the surcharge was 2% of the vat and duty charges, which worked out at 43 cents on an otherwise vat and duty bill of €21.28, the item/shipping itself was probably about 70e.
Massive difference compared to Fed-Ex who will charge €12.10 regardless.

Regarding Fed-Ex - it's nonsense, all other businesses have to calculate vat charges, pay the government and they absorb the costs of doing so, it's a cost of doing business.

Fed-Ex just weren't used to and/or expected to do it so. Now that they are, they have managed to get this admin charge thrown into the mix while at the bargaining table with whomever, comreg perhaps.

Yeah, the buck stops with Comreg, I got onto the consumer association first and they passed me on to Comreg.
I managed to dig up the email they sent me:

"Many thanks for your email, copy below, in relation to VAT and customs duties on parcels received from abroad. The following information may help.

If the parcel or package comes from outside the European Union (EU),VAT and any duties must be paid before the parcel is delivered to you. If the parcel comes from another EU country, it is not subject to VAT or duties, as these are already included in the price of the goods within the parcel.

The VAT and Custom Duty depend on the company that delivers the package and varies from one provider to another. One of three situations may apply.

    • The delivery provider pays the fee to clear the item from customs and then charges you directly.

    • The delivery provider tells you the relevant charge and asks for payment before delivering the package to you.

    • The delivery provider lets you deal directly with the Revenue Commissioners.

The amount charged is up to the delivery provider and can vary from one provider to another. NOTE : We have no regulatory role in relation to charges. Usually these charges are based on a percentage of the value of the goods stated to be in the package, with a minimum charge of between €5 and €25.We suggest you contact the delivery provider for a list of current charges.

Should you wish to influence the Commissions decision making in relation to Postal matters , please register on our website, www.comreg.ie/registration, and we will send you an email each time we place new information about postal matters (including consultations) on the website.

I hope the above information helps."

If Fed-Ex gave me an option of paying the vat and duty prior to the package being delivered in order to avoid the admin fee - I'd choose that in 99.9999% of cases - What I'm ordering I can afford to wait the extra few days/week/etc for, they have never given me that option.

Call me cynical, but I wonder why. :p

In my opinion/guess, the admin fee they charge is to subsidise the costs they incur from the people who just completely ignore their vat/duty invoices and/or it's profit taking.
Either way, seeing as I am paying the government fees due (and I'd really rather not have too), I am not going to pay for the people who aren't going to or line Fed-Ex's pockets for
doing something that is standard business practice.

Must email comreg to to register my feelings on it.
