OK so I'm in quarters of club championship singles (class 1), I'm trying to arrange a match and I've offered my availability this evening, any time this weekend, any time on Tuesday. Match to be played by 12 August but I'm on hols from 9th.

Opponent is saying he's unavailable to all these but will play tonight (weather permitting). What am I supposed to do? Who gives the walkover if the match isn't played?

I always though the rule to be that the guy on top (ooh er!) can offer three dates. If none of those are suitable then he gets the tie. perhaps that's more a club rule than a universal one though.

Not sure how you being on holiday affects it though...

Sounds to me like you've been more than accomodating.

Offering to play you this evening at such short notice is simply not on.

Personally, if he hasn't come up with a solution I would put my name through.

You could always choose to take the best nett score on a weekend singles as the winner.

Call your match sec and explian the situation before you put your name up though. Could end up with a bit of a stand off and bad blood between you and your opponent if you don't.

In fact maybe that's the solution, a fight in the car park.

I don't understand. You've said you can play tonight and he has said that this suits him........what's the problem or have I read it incorrectly?

He'll play weather permitting, i.e. if its sh!tty like it is now, he won't play

if he refuses to play tonight and the course is open he forfits. After all its his agreement. Both of you are availabe and he has agreed tonight. you just insist on playing tonight if course is open. ( weather permitting in his mind sounds like if he thinks its raining too hard he can shy away ) not on...... Bloody fair weather golfers tut tut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

Ok I didn't grasp the significance of the weather permitting bit.

As was said above then, if the course is open and if one of you wants to continue but the other doesn't then that to me is a forfeit.

Don't be fretting about things now. no point worrying about what ifs. Take it that your match is going to be on tonight and focus and concentrate on that. If it doesn't go ahead then you can worry about when you are going to play it or the other scenarios. Forget about all that and prepare for your match and get in the proper frame of mind.

    cheers fellas

I'm going to kick his ass, he's off 3 and I'm 7 so I'll have to have a good day and hopefully he'll have a bad one, as there's no shots.

he won it last year and in previous years and knocked me out so it's pay back. He's arrogant too so beating him will be all the more satisfying ;)

well in that case it sounds like he is playing mind games
Paulus is right get in the correct frame of mind

I'd say a little clip of an 8-iron (though the 5-wood might work too) under the left ear just as he's driving off might work wonders too. :o

Matchplay just isn't the same since they banned the shoulder-charge on the green!!!!

Yeah best of luck..Paulus M'S post is spot on....don't understand the bit about "no shots"...in singles matchplay it should be full H/C diff ??

It'll be scratch matchplay. Must be the club matchplay for the low boys in the club - i.e. category one players.

Haha... class Stringy! After the big build up today RTE should have had live scoring on aertel.

Great win though! How did the guy take it? I'd say the weather must've been rough for some of the round, so well done. Best of luck in the semis too!

weather was grand, rained on 18, breezy but no biggy. He blamed achilles injury and his not bein able to swing properly, he didn't play his normal game. he's grand lad really, get on well, top golfer usually so that's why it's even sweeter. On captain's night he asked did i think i could beat him? yes and i delivered :D

Scratch golf wins must be sweeter than having no handicap to rely on. You are actually better than him it means. An 18 handicapper beating a 3 handicap just doesn't seem fair.

    Congrats again

Well done stringy. There's nothing like the feeling you get from winning a match that "on paper", you shouldn't win. Good comeback after being 2 down after 6 also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭kenco

well done, best of luck for the rest of it

I had a similar experience a couple of years back with a guy who did not bother contacting me till the very last minute and insisting we play on a particular day. Like with your guy he turned out to be fine and we had a bit of crack

I have been following this "story" with interest over the last couple of days. So well done Stringy. Hope you go all the way now!!

    Fair play mate well done.

Squeakey bum time after 15 eh?;) Great feeling afterward I'd say!

I was playing in the final on Sunday and lost 3 & 2 but the guy I was playing against was a nightmare. He jammied 7 long putts into the hole at 100mph, fluked a few thin shots onto the green, fluffed drives which bounded endlessly up the fairway and before I knew it I was 4 down after 7. He then started making noises on my backswing and whistled when I putted. I pulled it back to 2 down after 15 but at this stage he had thrown my golf clubs in the lake and took my left golf shoe off....... :D

Well done Stringy, great story to follow....
