Alternative to 8gb Ipod Nano

I've been asked by my brother to pick up a music player for his wife while in America next week. He already has a Ipod Nano, but doesn't mind if I get a different brand. Any suggestions on anything similar to the Ipod but might be better? Something reasonably simple?
    Thanks in advance.

Sony 8 gig Nwz-a8xx series ftw.Doesn't have radio or calendar or whatever other bells and whistles ipods have:p but has better sound quality and longer battery life which is most important imo

Cowon D2 seems to be a wonderful simple and stylish quality device, might be worth considering!
