Medical/Contract offer - which normally comes first

I interviewed for a new position a while back and was contacted last week to provide references (which would be glowing :D) . A couple days later I was asked to attend xxxxx for a medical. I have yet to be specifically told - 'you have the job, and here is what your salary etc. is'.

I asked and was told an offer would be made once medical was clear.

Is this the normal order of things?

Sounds fairly normal to me. Companies don't want to extend offers then have to withdraw them if something gets flagged at reference or medical. They're just getting everything in order before progressing.

Assuming you're not really unhealthy, it sounds like you've got this one in the bag! :)

The only thing you should be wary of in the current climate is the position getting cancelled :o

    Sounds entirely normal.
It can take a couple of days for the doctor to shuffle the paper and get it back to the Personnel Officer- so hang on in there.......

Yep normal. At the point of doing a medical they are prepared to offer you the position as long as you are medically sound...

    Congrats you are almost there!

The reason I asked is that previously in other jobs a contract offer was made first - subject to passing the medical. It could be a waste of time and expense for a hiring company if after a medical the applicant turns down the contract offer as unsatisfactory.

Or visa versa it could be a complete waste of time and expense if after agreeing a contract the applicant fails a medical. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The company would then have to go back to other candidates who may be unavailable.

It makes sense to have the medical first before signing the contracts, but I'd prefer to receive at least an offer letter first with the salary details etc.
