Im taking my machine in for repair to swap out the motherboard and GPU

however i want to be sure theyre actually going to replace it and not just tell me they did. im paranoid that way.

in what way can i distinguish one identical piece of hardware from another?

    UV Marker and Lamp

A mark in a specific place

Take a photo, some newer / older boards have slight variants.

Yeah I agree with ironclaw that opening the case and putting a mark on both would be a good idea. You might also ask for the old ones to be returned.

Usually it is something that can be done pretty easily though, so you might consider doing the sway yourself.

Your motherboard should have a built in Network Card, this card will have a Physical Address (MAC Address) which will be unique.

To find it Click Start -> Run -> Type in "cmd" and click ok.
In the Dos screen type in "ipconfig/all" and press enter. Scroll up until you see Physical Address and write it down.

Other way is to get a black marker and put an X somewhere on the graphics card/motherboard (or colour in the corner).

MAC Address's are NOT globally unique and can be cloned...

So, not a fool proof way.

I highly doubt the shop is gonna go to the trouble of cloning MAC addresses.

Is there no serial number on the motherboard and gfx card?

I take it he has a laptop given the Wireless card showing up under network adapters so its harder to get to.

lol, all you want to do is see if the MAC addresses change.

Spoofing a MAC Address.....that would be a pretty crazy step for them to take to be honest. Were not exactly talking about specialists here....

    Never gonna happen.

Also, chance of a duplicate from the same manufacturer is basically zero.

I agree that it would be highly unlikely, but it is definitely possible without too much effort, which is why I suggested putting a mark on the actual motherboard and processor.

The odds of them actually doing it are pretty small, but if I were planning on scamming someone for a new motherboard/processor and the labor to change it, I would take the time to spoof the Mac address.

I think the mark would be the easiest, quickest, and most reliable way to ensure it is replaced. Well that and asking for your old hardware back.

well I took the operating temp on the GPU down too. Ill expect a replacement card would at least be somewhat lower than what I had (which was 62C idle)

Its already been picked up by fedex and its on its way across the country now :/ I just hope it doesnt turn into some epic battle between me and hewlett packard (because bets are I'd win)

Not necessarily- the new nVidia cards run incredibly hot......

True. Newer gear can be hotter. Did you make a physical mark?

No I didn't. Machines back in hand. They wiped the hard drive :( I'd be mad at them but I backed it all up and on the bright side firefox is loading hella fast again - but I havent installed any updates yet :)

00-1B-77-C3-29-7C......... thats not supposed to be a match right? Thats wireless though: the Ethernet MAC is new.

According to the warranty the reset the disk (bastards!) swapped the system board and did work on the Heat sink - which I understand is the root of the nvidia card issue. Until further developments Im satisfied.

They Probably just switched the Motherboard and used the old Wireless card (it is just a little card that connects to the Motherboard).
