My bro's in Thailand at the moment, I think you're better off changing it here. Give the bank some notice though.

    Hi All,

    Sorry to rob your thread.

Speaking of Thailand, I'm off there soon.

How soon should you get vaccinations before heading there? We are heading there first 2 weeks of September. How soon before heading away do you need to get the vaccinations?

    Cheers all

Just back. I brought some over and then just use my atm when needed.

You want to be getting your jabs very soon.

WHere are you going in Thailand as I had to go back several times for a certain shots.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 181 ✭✭deadfingers

donal7 go to your local doc and explain what parts of Thailand your are going to as you dont need certain shots if you are not going to North Thailand. My doc had a big book with whats shots you need depending on where you go. Just and try and get it done sonner than later as when I got mine done the doc had to order in some of the vaccines and I was waiting anumber of days but then again I am from a rural area.

    Enjoy Thailand its wonderful!!!

My doc swears by the Center for Disease Control for up to date info on jabs. Here's a link to the Thailand page: Link

As for currency there's an ATM every 10 yards in towns and no shortage of them anywhere else. Check how much your bank charges to withdraw money outside the euro zone and decide then whether to get it at home or as you go along.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how much money would you need to live for 2 months in Nov-Jan. Looking for good basic accomodation.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 135 ✭✭Board-in-work

As for costs - it all depends on how well you want to live whilst out there.

    For example -

For the price of a B&B in Ireland you can live in a 5 star hotel - Bangkok and Pattaya have very cheap 4/5 start hotels.

For beach living - probably about 15 euros a night for the accomodation for a beach hut - or less.

Eating out - you can eat at street stalls very cheaply (cents). Go out and spend 10/15 euro in a top restraunt for loads of thai food / seafood - that price includes drinks.

Wine is expensive in Thailand because its' mostly imported. Beers can be had for 70cent - 1 euro depending on the hotel / pub / stall.

1 litre of Whiskey in a nightclub (say Johnny Walker) will cost about 14 euros (I paid about £10) - this will include your mixers. You can take what you don't drink away with you.

I think the max. cost of a songtaw(?) is 20 baht by law - tuk tuks to be costed beforfe you get into them.

If you're staying more than 1 week in a hotel - arrange a weekly or a monthly rate - always cheaper.

Where are you going? are you moving about as if you are you will want to travel as light as possible

leave the jeans at home as light trousers is what you need with the heat.

Just wash your socks and jocks

All I wore was shorts and very light trousers. half a dozen t-shirts. sandels and walking shoes (Trekking in the jungle). socks only for walking shoes. 1 towel.

That's seriously way too much to be bringing with you hon. Why would you bring trainers AND shoes AND flipping flops? Forget about bringing towels too, you can buy beach towels anywhere for a couple of yo-yos each and they are too cumbersome to be packing, they take up too much room. And why exactly are you bringing socks?

Leave the shoes, jeans and towels for a start. Actually if I was going back to thailand i'd bring one change of clothes and buy everything else over there!!!

Forget the socks and jocks. It's too warm for underwear. My rule is that if it passes 23deg then no boxers!;)

Take out either your phone charger or your mobile charger. You'll only need one or other.:D

1 pair of jeans is plenty. 4 or 5 tshirts. 1 pair of swimmers. 1 or 2 pairs of regular shorts.

In other words, lose about 1/2 to 3/4's of what you have in there.:pac:

Hi...spent a lot of time in Thailand....

Only bring 1 pair of jeans. It's way too hot to wear jeans - just use them if you're going out to dinner somewhere. I wore 3/4 length trousers, or board shorts everywhere. No problems. You wont wear the trainers unless you go trekking. It's flip flops all the way. I never wore shoes for 3 months the last time. Theres no problem getting in anywher only wearing 3/4 trousers or flip flops. You can always buy cheap t-shirts as you need them. Everything is avaliable there. Don't have the hassle of carrying too much.

right i've changed my list to:

    1 pair jeans
    two ¾ lengths
    5 swim shorts
runners, flip flops and sandals (no shoes)
    zero socks/jocks?
    about 4 going out shirts
    3 casual daytime shirts
only one towel for both shower drying and beaching?
    Raincoat
    Belt
lynx, shampoo, red dax, shower gel, toothbrush+toothpaste, shaving stuff
    aftersun + suncream
    passport
    mobile charger

anything else i can cut out or anything im forgetting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

    That looks about right.

Anything you forget to bring over can be got in BKK easily so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Bring as little as possible because you'll probably end up adding to your bag as you go along.

would you get a beatdown if you wore an irish jersey in thailand or would other heads come over and have bant with you coz they see you're from ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Could you not just of added this to your previous post about heading off to Thailand?

The answer? No. Of course you're not going to get the head beat off you if you're wearing and Irish jersey

Indeed, this sartorial non-crisis doesn't need a new thread. Merged.

If you do happen to change your money over there MAKE SURE to check the rate out online before you go... I got stung out there and im still raging over it...

If your crossing the border over to Malaysia or wherever and your told you need a certain amount of money to get through security on the border RUN A MILE, its a scam, trust me, they roast you on the rate..

How many threads are you going to create about your trip to Thailand? Another 5 or 6 in the next 2 weeks?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 135 ✭✭Board-in-work

    Hi,

If you're bringing runners - you will need some runner socks. You're feet will get red- raw rubbing with no socks wearing runners.

You dont really need a raincoat. Ponchos and macs are widely avaliable. Even during the rainy season, it may rain very hard for half an hour, with the rest of the day sunny.

You will need a hat. Baseball cap or something to keep the sun off. A moneybelt - always good to carry your camera, wallet etc. A good waterproof one always best - or bring some some small zip-lock bags - to put your camera and stuff into.

If you're travelling further than Thailand - a small pocket calculator is a good idea to make sure you don't get ripped off in any currency transactions, or when haggling on a beach with someone.

When you land in Thailand - pick up some Gold Cup from the pharmacy. It's like tiger balm. It's the best thing for mozzie bites. Rub it on for instant relief.

Best not to carry wads of cash with you OP, the notes are in small denominations so if you are bringing enough for a fortnight you'll wind up like P Diddy with fistfuls of dolla. ATMs are everywhere.

For jabs, the Tropical Medicine Bureau are very good. All info is on their site www.tmb.ie

    Merged - again.

alwaysonthebeer - do not keep creating new threads for every single aspect of your trip.
