I just recieved my new laptop 13" Dell Vostro 1310 and have to say i like it very much and am impressed with the preformance so far....

I use my laptop for work and need to connect to the domain at work but it seems vista home premium doesnt do this. Do other versions of vista do this or will i have to go back to windows xp?

Vista Ultimate definitely will, but if you want my advice get rid of Vista altogether. Downgrading can be a pain in the 'you-know-what' but it's worth it.

Im not sure if home premium is setup to do that but I have to hope and assume Business edition is. Ive had some weird times in the past trying to get Vista and XP machines to see eachother over a shared network - they can LAN-game and everything perfect, but sharing files for work is another kettle of fish that I never got working. Vista could see Vista, XP could see XP but Vista couldnt see XP and XP couldnt see Vista.

However I wasnt at it very long, and if I had been I would have found this article from microsoft: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/6ed24a90-6b57-4f0f-a3b3-e521ae945f331033.mspx

    ^_^;;

edit: I should also note I never had an issue connecting the ITCarlow wireless domain on home premium

Yeah its a bit of a pain. I know what your saying be done with it and go back to XP but i still have my old laptop which is fine and i might just keep that for work and keep my new one seperate.

I dont know what it is about vista though it does look nice just have to figure out its sleep and hibernate functions my screen doesnt want to come alive after it sometimes.

Get vista business. Full networking support and also RDP support too.

Altho you can also get RDP support in vista home premium too if you know how ;)

odd, one of the few areas vista is getting praised in is for making a sleep function that actually works (versus XP)

    Vista Ultimate + 1

    I wouldn't downgrade...

    Vista Ultimate + 1
Out of interest, what features of Ultimate do you use that Business doesnt have?

Humm ok, bitlocker is good point :D

But at the same time, I prob wouldnt use it as it would mean my vista partition would be inaccessable from my xp partition. :P

A guy I work with just gave me a copy of Vista Extreme. Has anyone here got it installed and what do they think of it?

You have just invented a new version of vista. Sounds like a cracked version to me.

Yep its cracked. Looks good (see link) but I'm just wondering has anyone else used it before I install it.

Vista Extreme? Nice. Is it mad happenin' with wicked skillz, y'all?

I wouldn't touch it with someone else's disinfected 10-foot-bargepole. Seriously, while it has the advantage of being free, you have no idea of what else has been done to the OS. Hell, it could have a background service making it available as a kiddy porn repository for all you know. Would you want to take that chance?

My personal recommendation is Vista Business, but then again I've not yet found a compelling reason to fully switch over so at the moment I run both XP Pro and Vista Business in a dual-boot config, both at work and at home.

Ya I am a bit nervy of installing it but Vista is just wrecking my head. I takes about 2 and half minutes to boot up. CPU goes up to a 100% very often and for a long time when I'm just sitting on the desktop. I love the look and feel of it but I can't handle the slowness.

TBH that's just Vista, there's a reason it can take up to 15GB of space to install. Have you tried turning all the Aero crap off and reverting back to the Windows Classic interface? Did wonders for performance on every machine I've used it on, and they've mostly been machines with the hardware to handle it in the first place.

And, because it bears repeating, steer well clear of dodgy torrent-based versions of Windows. God only knows what's in there. I'd be kind of curious to run it in a virtual machine just to see what it tries to do, but caution is going to over-rule curiosity in this case.
