counting heart rate

    how unfit would you be if you couldn't even count your heart rate because it is going too fast?

    Can't really answer that question. Even fit people can get their heart rate up to very high levels during exercise. You really need a heart rate monitor to accurately measure your heart rate. I've hit > 180 bpm before while running fast.

    I ask because I have just started classes where aerobic excercise is part of the session, and we do a heart rate check at one point, and I couldn't even count mine.

    Your instructor should have explained the reasoning why he's getting his class to check their BPM, and if he's doing that its not real measure of fitness anyway.

    Is he measuring your rest BPM and your recovery rates too?.

    Anyway, just count the beats in 15 seconds and multiply by 4. You should be able to count that.
