Nintendo Sues 5 Japanese Companies Over Piracy

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nintendo Co Ltd said on Tuesday it had filed a lawsuit against five Japanese firms for importing and selling equipment that enables illegal game programs to be played on Nintendo's popular DS portable video game player.

Nintendo said it filed the lawsuit earlier in the day at the Tokyo District Court together with 54 other Japanese software makers.

Sounds like they're targetting the guys who sell the carts (rather than the manufacturers). If the manufacturers can't sell the carts, they'll have a bit of a struggle on their hands. The interesting thing (and it should carry some weight) is that they're backed by 54 other companies.

If it is successful (and you have to assume it will be), its going to make things difficult for the DS homebrew scene....

The lawsuit is deliberately vague apparently. I'm sure the gory details will be out shortly.
