Really like the first one. The sillhouets are fantastic.
Wouldn't say it was easy takn pics in these conditions?

What caused the fire, can I ask? And why are those people so close-by?!

They burn all the dead waste off sugar cane before it is collected for processing. The men standing in close to the flames are the ones who control the spread of the fire. If you look close you can see the petrol packson their backs and the sprayers in their hands. I'm thinking of putting it in to my portfolio next year, as it works in well with my theme. Do you think it is good enough????????????/:D:D:D

A pal of mine was involved in sugar production in Africa (development work), he was telling me about this, as the OP says it gets rid of the waste but also the rats...... apparently they are huge and vicious.

Two great shots, the first is my fave.

They used be selling cane rats for nosh at the side of the road where I was in Africa. never had one, although the cane itself is nice.
Cool shots, they wouldn't be out of place as an album cover or horror movie poster.

Yeah, where I was the people waited on the edge of the fire with sticks to beat the rats with. Though you have to be on the ball cuz god knows what will come flying out next...:D:D:D

Completely agree. Camera shake is too much for me. Great colour and composition and exposure, but the camera shake i feel is too distracting

    Oh christ :pac: ;)

Pics confuse me. It's a big blurry flame... I'm kinda missing where the composition is or something.

Your just a babby, no grip on reality yet.:p

I actually quite like the 1st picture.

I agree on the environmental issues that surround this. You might be glad to know that in the next few years they will be introducing laws against this in Zambia, although we will see how long that lasts with all the corruption out there. Personally I think the slight blur on these addsto the intensity of the flames. Although I can see how it distracts some people.:D:D:D

Sorry to take this further OT, but what are the environmental issues here exactly?

I real like the first one myself. Once again i think the camera shake adds a lot to it, but don't think it would hold up over multiple shots.

Out of interest, do you have any clear shots of the same scene to compare?

love the first one, the 2nd, the shilouttes aren't strong enough. For me the camera shake looks like a kind of heat haze and works well, reminds me of the shaky robert capa pictures on the normandy landing photos

it's bloody stupid anyway - burning away future fertility. it's probably the fertiliser companies who supply the petrol.

Camera shake works. Great pictures, especially the first one and something that would be a good addition to your portfolio

Weren't most of the negatives ruined by an over-enthusiastic assistant?
