I've been noticing all these "impromptu" beers lately. What exactly is impromptu about them if they were being planned days or weeks in advance? Impromptu would be like... beers in an hour? anyone up for it? now that's a bit more spontaneous. Sorry for being a cock, but I'm a moaning Michael today

impromptu - made or done without previous preparation or suddenly or hastily prepared, made, etc.

In comparison to the regular Boards beers, or even individual forum beers, which generally are arranged up to a month in advance and there's plenty of publicity surrounding them, a few days notice is pretty much impromptu. Given the nature of Boards, it's not practical to organise beers an hour in advance, at least a couple of days notice is required for most people to see that there's something arranged as people generally aren't logged in 24/7 (Brother Ruu excepted). While I agree that this means that they're not strictly impromptu, it's about as good as you're going to manage on a website this big and really it's just a handy name for them to distinguish them from the more organised events.
