I was due to receive a guitar amp which I had bought from an Ebay seller in Italy.

Customs returned it to the sender as the package contained a magnet.

This sounds utterly bizarre to me. Do any of you have any idea what that could be about.

    Cheers.

What!, i've bought 2 speakers from the states and had no probs, and also valve amps from europe. That's insane!

That makes absolutely no sense (to me). Are you sure its not crossed wires, have you rung customs?

That can't be right - anything with a speaker contains magnets, including mobile phones. Never mind the super-powerful ones in hard drives etc...

Plus, when was it ever illegal to import magnets? I've seen more than a few people with rare-earth magnets from thinkgeek.

That makes no sense. I just received a bass amp recently with a cab (and speakers obviously!). It came from the US via Belgium and the UK. No problems whatsoever.

When customs were telling you that you should probably have asked them why it was a problem, particularly for an item coming from within the EU.

Well, that is what the sender was told by the post office at his end. He was going there to clarify it. He couldn't understand it either. He had sent amps all over the world and had never encountered this before, that there would be restrictions on sending magnets. Nor has anyone else, it would seem. I will keep you guys posted.

did u ever see on ebay though.. well i seeen it a good few times that people selling stuff dont sell to italy or some other various countries, i never knew why they ship anywhere in europe except italy, maybe theres some weird rules or regulations there,

but it has no help to ur situation :| ..does anyone actually know why some sellers do that?

Would it have anything to do with being ROHS/non-ROHS compliant?

Italy has a massive list of goods that arent allowed to be imported. Just regular stuff like shoes, leather, jewellery, clocks, toys, etc. Basically shedloads of packages get seized by customs. Which obviously creates problems with paypal claims and all that.

Also, the postal service and customs department are completely corrupt (allegedly). Goods go missing there more often than you'd expect from a European country.

So shipping companies often don't insure goods sent to Italy to the same extent as other European coutries, and a lot ebay of sellers will have had problems and hassles over the years, with siezed goods, missing goods etc.

Basically its just gotten a reputation as a country that isn't worth the bother shipping to, which is why you see the 'We don't ship to Italy' disclaimer on a lot of auctions.

Right, basically the sender had to go down to his post office in Italy and sign a declaration saying "magnets non active". Whatever that means.

And then he had an argument with the guy working there who was looking for the cost of postage again (that seems to be a common feature at post offices the world over).

Active magnets have been added to my list of items not to send by post

    1. 60/40 Blood/Semen mixture
    2. A pair of live breeding badgers
    3. Panda meat
    4 Active magnets

Hope i don't offend any Italians out there, but i would never buy anything from a seller in Italy on ebay.

The damn postal service over there is rotten to the core.

I assume it is the irish customs. Why are they getting involved in EU country goods. Bozo's......they should be worried about the gear from outside the EU.....but not my guitars.

The Italian postal service is rotten to the core and i would never buy anything from a seller located in Italy.

Hope you get a full refund from Paypal or from insurance.
