Anybody have adult adhd?

My GP is setting up an appointment with a psychiatrist and I am hoping to get diagnosed with ADHD once and for all so I can get on with with life.

I have it pretty bad as I can't do anything I want in life. I've only began to think recently that this may be my problem after years of problems in school, work, not being able to socialize or do anything I would like to do.

Just wondering if anyone here has gone through the process and am interested in hearing how ritalin or adderall etc. improved their lives.

Somebody has compared the those med's to be like taking three espresso's. Is that apt?

Get a referral to a psychiatrist if you are wondering if you have ADHD. A psychologist will not be able to diagnose it or treat it.

Whoops my mistake. I meant to say psychiatrist. Will fix that now.

I totally sympathise with you, after years of not realising the signs of ADD and never having been diagnosed in childhood I came across an article that discusses adult ADD that described me to a T on the net. I was shocked at just how many of the symptoms I had. I have a friend in America that has had it since she was a child and she gave me a new prescription drug, Vyvanse that has just been brought out for it and it is a godsend. Unfortunately it isnt on the market in Ireland (shocking right).

I recently discussed my symptoms with a GP (not really my regular one) and when I showed him my self evaluation and the article he seemed to dismiss me, saying that I instead have anxiety and depression issues. He is going to refer me to a psychiatrist though. I am hoping that the psychiatrist actually takes the time to listen to my concerns and gives me the help I need. No one seems to believe me, even my own husband, but I know myself better than anyone and I am convinced I have this condition which has hindered me from succeeding in life.

I just want to know if you ever got your evaluation and what became of it?

You have pretty much diagnosed yourself there so given your appointment was cancelled perhaps its worth self medicating seeing how you get on and reporting this to your psychiatrist so they can assess you more fully and assess your suitability to ritalin, adderall or the like.

On the other hand perhaps you should get over yourself and stop looking for an excuse.

Check your diet, your attitude, do some research, exercise and get out more.

I've a good mind to tell you where to go doctor.

Telling someone to get over themselves and self medicate is not a helpful or responsible thing to say to someone who might have a disorder. How are you supposed to self medicate with Adderall or Ritalin when they are prescription only drugs? ADHD has to be assessed by a professional and YOU are obviously no doctor or expert and are just here to make spiteful comments.

You need to stay off this board and keep your comments to yourself, unless you are going to say something constructive.

Clearly you know jack sh*t about medicine. Amphetamines and ephedrine are very different things.

And as for giving the Evening Herald as a source..

OP - don't listen to this guy, wait it out until you can see your psychiatrist.

Many ephedrine based products are OTC

ADHD has to be assessed by a professional

Exactly my point – the OP has self diagnosed in what appears to be an attempt to excuse past behaviour.

You need to stay off this board and keep your comments to yourself, unless you are going to say something constructive.

You mean instead of stroking the OP's ego and apparent need for pity? There has to be another forum within boards.ie where you can do this instead of the Biol/Med section where clear, analytical and proper advice is given.

Are they indeed? With respect where did you study pharmacology? Perhaps google the two. They are very similar molecularly and in physiological effect.

It appeared the OP is neither scientifically nor medically qualified and something recent and in layman’s terms seems appropriate.

Yes I agree wait instead until they tell you to get over yourself, get out more, exercise more and alter your diet.

    .

Just to show how idiotic and dangerous your advice is:

Effexor (an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety drug) and Ecstasy/MDMA are both members of the phenethylamine family.

Does that mean someone with anxiety disorder or depression should just neck a couple of E's?

As for the psychiatrist telling the OP to get over himself - I think you're the one who needs to get over yourself, you're the one "diagnosing" the OP as using the possibility he has ADHD as a way of excusing his behaviour.

I think you should let the medical professionals evaluate the OP's problem, and perhaps you could go troll elsewhere?

    Just a suggestion.

No of course not since there would be at the very least differences in quality of ingredient and issues of dosage. MDMA was around long before its use as an illicit lifestyle drug.

Was it not the OP diagnosing himself as such to excuse his past behaviour pattern?

Fair point but the OP did put it up here for discussion and opinion - I am just giving mine.

I think that sums up this thread.

The original post that caused all this argument has now been removed but I do agree with one thing he said and it made me think afterwards. I might aswell say it now as a reply to Zamboni's post.

I realize that there was a big problem in my logic as is obvious from the op but I had no idea how to approach a doctor. I've made a leap since. Most of you think that this is so obvious but for some reason I didn't know it.

Due to that post by 406C I think and other things that have happened only in the last week or so I have realized how important it is going to be for me to go into the appointment completely neutral and just outline my symptoms. I'll let the doctor decide what they add up to.
