This is most likely a silly question but I've got a portable 2.5" HDD that is usb powered. However unlike most external USB drives it uses 2 usb connections to fully power it.

I'm not sure if this means that it would leech more power from the ps3 than is good for it or not so i said i'd ask here. Have any of ye used one of these with the ps3 successfully?

It's not really a silly question. The fact that your Ext HDD needs two USB connections more than likely means that it needs more power than a standard 1 USB connection [~5 volts, I think].

The fact that the PS3 has a minimum of 2 USB ports, each able to power deviced, I believe [read not 100% sure] that the PS3 will have no problem with it.

Probably the better way of doing it is to purchase an internal 2.5 inch SATA HDD and replace your existing PS3. Allows for much more flexability and possibly requires less power.

IF you are going to go down this route, backup your photos, game saves and other things. Actually, perform a PS3 Backup to your Ext HDD before swapping it out.

    Highly recommended.

*EDIT* It should be worth mentioning that Sony have incorporated Disk encryption on their HDD. If you put in a larger disk, it will take a LOT of time to format it. As reference, my 320GB HDD took about 24 hours. Do a full format and not a quick format, if it's the first time formatting a PS3 disk. THEN you should be able to restore your PS3 stuff from your Ext HDD.

Have you tried plugging it in with just one of the cables? Most 2.5" caddies come with the 'double cable' these days, but I've never had to use both cables on anything bar old USB 1 machines.

My PS3 powers mine with just the one cable plugged in no problems.

NOTE: You do have to have the drive formated to FAT32 in order for the PS3 to detect it though.

Drive is fat 32 formatted, and really just used for storing and sharing avi's and such. Have a 60gb ps3 which is more than enough space for game saves etc.

The caddy won't work on my usb 2.0 ports without having both plugged in. Maybe a new caddy is in order.
