I am currently with o2 (prepay) but I wanted to try a 3pay sim in my unlocked phone to test the features of having a data add-on. I couldn’t see that I could order a 3pay sim on the three.ie website (like you can on o2), do you have to go into a store to obtain one?

    thanks everyone

I don't think you can get the sims from a 3 store anymore...

I'd recommed you get a 3 phone, you'll see what all the fuss is about then, i think it's a bit pointless putting a 3 sim in a non 3 phone, espicially for anyone new to the network...

3 offer a 14 day money back gurantee with all there phones, no questions asked, suggest you buy a phone and try it out for 14 days......

the n73 for €179 is a great offer on 3pay and all the 3 apps work on it such as skype and mobicast etc...

You won't get all of the three functionality on a non-3 handset either.
Planet 3 and some of the apps require a 3 handset.
You could have a play with a similarly spec'd phone in one of the 3 shops ?

thanks all for the replies. Online chat support on three.ie confirmed that you must buy a handset as well.

I wouldn't listen to them, seriously.

For a good while you had to buy a phone but then they introduced sim packs. Though according to drunkmonkey you may not be able to anymore, but I'd still check.

Sim packs are only available through 3stores and are still available. €9 with €10 credit on it.

Thanks guys, i will check when next in town. A lot of bad press on this board re 3 customer service so if this is the case then there's another example (given I was told by 3 online I needed the handset)

If you have an unblocked phone supported by them they should give you the settings for planet 3. Otherwise go into a 3 store and copy the settings from one of the working phones in the shop

    +1
Also, if you have a 3g phone, make sure you turn it off gsm only and on to dual mode.. 3 brand vodafone as 3 aswell and for the life me for the first half hour i was shocked at how bad this hsdpa that everyone was raving about was.. Little did i know that it was vodafones gprs network :)

If you have an old sim card lying around, you can port it to 3 for free and get 20 free credit. Prob the best option for a trial.

Thanks picked up the sim pack today and used the number from an unused 02 sim to port over. Sim Pack = €9 (with €5 credit), If you port your number they only give you an additional €5 credit now.

I felt a bit silly for posting just 'yes' and seeing that followed up by posts suggesting you couldn't, but I was right all along!
