Cleaning hardwood floors with a wet vac ???

We recently bought an old house with really amazing solid wood floors throughout. They are not jointed however (tongue and groove etc.) and so dirt gets down between them. The boards have shrunk over the years and there are some larger gaps too.
I am considering getting a Vax 6131 multi function carpet cleaner or similar to clean them properly. Currys sell them for about 200 euro. Does anyone have any experience with these or alternative or any advice on keeping the floors clean?

Calk the gaps or re-lay them.

Then sand and polyurethane, oil, wax or bare depending on wood type.

What ever you do, don't replace them, or lay vinyl or carpet. An occasional rug or sheepskin is OK.
