From Pheonix Park Papal cross meeting at around 6:30 heading towards Maynooth and Kilcock, probably 60/70km spin.

    Who is in?

great, i plan to be there too.

something i noticed from last weeks spin... we were all over the place. people up the road, riders off the back. not everybody has to do work on the front, but at least keep the train togehter as to not p*ss off motorists.

Believe it or not, that ride was pretty organised for a Boards spin. Usually it's a lot more chaotic.

I might be in if I can my bike on the train into town tomorrow morning. Will probably cycle home towards Newbridge from Maynooth.

Sounds good, I hope to join ye.

Bad injury Peadar? I see mention of 'blood loss' on the Saturday spin thread? Hope you're OK.

Cheers unionman. Sliced my foot open on a rock while swimming in Killiney yesterday...did my own medical job to tie the wound together, just hoping I don't need stitches!

Can I ask what's the average speed of these spins? I'm only getting back into it and I'd probably be unable to keep up. I can average 23kph on my own over about 35k, so I'll need to go further and faster before joining yizzers, I suppose.

We always go faster as a group, you should be able to follow with no problem ... we're not team CSC just yet ... although we're working on it.
I reckon on flat we average 30k/hr ... I could be wrong... Am I wrong?

I'd say the ave is closer to 25kph

I was surprised how much easier that is to sustain in a group.

Won't be able to join you for this. I'm back rugby training on Tuesdays, so it'll have to just be weekend spins for me.

I would be interested in tagging along on this, as I was planning a spin out that neck of the woods 2moro evening.

The average is closer to 25km/h all right- on our recent four-county tour I clocked 25.4km/h. Caroline is right in that we would be going faster on the completely flat bits, if you glanced at your speedo on those bits I would imagine 30-35.

If you can average 23km/h on your own you would be more than fine, it is a lot easier in a group as everyone has said, you can fly along behind someone expending very little effort.

Thanks for the replies. I'd easily keep up with 25-30 while drafting. Just a bit worried about the distance now.

I'm hoping to run a race tomorrow night, but I'll keep an eye out for further spins in the coming weeks.

    Thanks all.

I'm out - don't have my road bike in with me.

I could cramp the groups style by turning up on my Smooth Hound though ;)

Fitted my mudguards this morning. Prepared for the worst.

In weather like this morning if you're looking for motivation to get on your bike you just need to grab a handful of gravel off the side of the road - shove it in your mouth and remember Andre Tchmil. What a legend:

I'm going to come along and see how I get on.

If I have trouble with the distance or speed I can always turn around.

I only realised the tour of kildare is just over a week away so I would like to get a long cycle in 1st.

I saw someone mentioned leg-warmers earlier, is it not too warm for them?

One more thing, did anyone receive a pack out in the post for the tour of kildare, I applied over a week ago but nothing arrived.

Personally, for me it is... I'll have arm warmers in my pocket for if it rains or gets nippy, but that's it

On distance and speed I'd say don't worry, you'll find your pace quickly. I am not fast and inexperienced on distance and had a great one on saturday. I'm in a simialr position with Kildare, want to get some practice in.

Too warm for leg warmers, your 'core' heats up fast, cool air on the legs is like personalised air conditioning. Arm warmers will be handy for cold / rain - I'm bringing shoe covers too.

No Kildare pack for me neither, and I paid about a week ago. Don't worry, there's still plenty of time.

Hope to see you later. I hope to see me there too!

It is looking uncannily sunny (there, I said it, I am bringing mudguards to keep it that way.)

Windy though. Is El Tonto heading out?

    No, but I am :)

    58,6km for me. Nice & easy :)
A bit muddy ... I noticed I was the only one muddy ...

Note to self, do not hold the wheel of the person in front of you when it's raining ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭unionman

Glad we weren't put off by the early shower. Grand spin, a nice pace. The bike is well muddy.

69.75 at the end (Tiny, I'd have gone round the block to clock 70 but there's work to be done:D)

    Avg speed 25.7kmh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

I got pretty muddy too, and I saw it on others, I can assure you weren't the only one! Just over 80km for me.

Well done to Aquinas73 for sticking with the group all the way around on his first Boards spin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,920 ✭✭✭Vélo

Thanks for that Blorg. I hope I didn't slow the group down too much.

I was lucky I made it back to the Phoenix Park when I did, they were closing the gates just as I got there.

Sorry for jumping in folks, was just scanning the Cycling section... would love to get back into cycling, but don't have a bike ...yet (old one was stolen a few years ago).

Anyway, are these spins, and are all you guys, on race bikes and flying along, or can anyone take part? Would like to get a bike again and join in with a like-minded group, but I'm guessing I'd be out of my depth with you lot?!

In other words, if you go in for sprint finishes and "king of the (Dublin) mountains" jerseys, I'll politely exit stage left :)
