I remember when we were young the Dublin Horse Show and in particular the Aga Khan Cup were things of great interest.I remember after we'd watched this on tv we would then go out and make our own jumps in the garden using two chairs apart with a couple of poles between them and various other articles that could be made into jumps so we would have a little course. We even had a water jump, minus the water of course, by placing two skipping ropes a metre or so apart. We would each have a go and somebody would time it on a stopwatch. We would even incur time penalties and if you refused at a jump three times you were disqualified.Ah yes those were the days alright. We had hours of fun.Of course the mother wouldn't be too happy to see her garden destroyed by all the showjumpers.

Anyone else remember doing things like this?

    Yes, I remember!

There was always a row as to who got to be "Eddie Macken" and who was "Raymondo D'inzaio" (sp)! Saw in the paper last week that Eddie Macken will be at the horse show this year!

That's brings back memories! We spent hours and days doing that. At the time it might have been one channel land in our house so we had to be creative in how we made our entertainment.

Yes I remember, and did you slap your arse as you were approaching a jump to make your horse go faster?

We used to do this with a space-hopper. I was always Commandant Gerry Mullins (I think that was his name).

You have right! RTE didn't come on until 6.00pm usually but used to come on early for the horse show. You had to be quick on our road to be the first out with the jumps so you could claim the honour of being the Irish team.

It was the same with the tennis at Wimbleton time.

Done exactly the same in that other great small showjumping country in Europe : Belgium. We had fights over who got to be Ludo Phillipaerts. Eddie Macken was a big nono :D

In a way we were spoilt, my grandda was a small time cattle trader and my dad's youngest brother was a bit of low key horsey lad so there were always a few jumping posts and poles lying around.

Another great one during summer was get your brightes t-shirt on and a pair of shorts, on yer bike and play Tour De France. Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon, Greg Lemond, Roche...where are the days ?

I lived in an estate where everyone had the same fences. Sometimes a gang of us would start in the end garden and have a race all the way round the street leaping over the fences.Cool! It was like the Grand National, half of us would be left behind lying injured and trampled.:D
Those were the days alright. Skipping ropes, hopscotch, balls(when you could say 'lets have a game of balls' without sounding pervy)-Plainy irish rhubarb etc.:)

How low have we fallen, climbing a tree is a health and safety no can do. Kicking a ball around in the streets is anti-social behaviour and if kids done the same as Ann22 some twat of a parent would claim against the unfortunate owner of the fence... .
