I would like to make full use of the animals that i hunt and I'd like to hear form some of the forums more experienced pelt tanners. If you tan hides to a level that you might find in a shop then i would love to know how and where abouts to you source your equipment and chemical supplies.

Is there a kit that one can buy? i haven't seen them in gun shops here!

I don't want to hear that you need an explosives permit to obtain Salt peter (potassium nitrate):P, if thats the case i better apply for licence to own matches or a bottle of gas.:(

So where do you go to buy tanning gear/chemicals etc etc....:D

    Tanning book on e-bay:

Most books on taxidermy will deal with tanning. To correctly tan a pelt can be a lot of work & time to get it top quality - most of the materials are freely in chemists or vets stores.

Oh, it's also worth asking on http://livinghistory.ie - they have a good few people that have tanned hides in every way imaginable.

    Found this: http://www.cahe.nmsu.edu/pubs/_l/l-103.pdf

Seems like a pretty good guide.

    Gonna give it a go.

Ive sprayed the skins with diesel with a window lean bottle and allowed to air dry over a season does OK.

If you want to really do the job right you "Deerskins into Buck Skins-How to tan with Brains,Soap or Eggs" By Mat Richards ISBN 0-9658672-4-2.
