new to this thread, so be patient!

im looking to backup my own films (dvds i have purchased) onto one external hardrive, which i would like to then play on my pc or hd flatscreen.

    a couple of questions:

is there a piece of software that will give me an interface, genre, name, actor, with a pict of the film available, something like i-tunes for mp3?

shoul i convert the dvds to divx format?

    is there a better system?

    any help appreciated

Hmmm, if its just to watch the films on the PC or HDTV, i'd just play the actual DVDs

Esp on the HDTV, it'd be well worth the full quality, and it would prob get upscaled

I'd only go to the hassle of backing up a DVD collection to use with a portable media player

Anyways, ripping is what you want to be doing

DivX is a handy balance of quality and file size

Windows Media Player lets you choose what collumns to have, such as Genre etc, and you can edit them all, so I think thats the best option

On my mac, I use a combination of Handbrake to rip DVDs, MetaX to tag them with genre/date/actors etc and iTunes to organise and play them back.

Handbrake and iTunes are available for Windows, but I'm not sure about MetaX.

Or if you're streaming to your television, which is my plan.

I downloaded a program called Fair Use which appears to be the reliable "one click" ripping app I need, but I haven't been able to test it properly on my TV yet as it encodes the sound in AC3 which I can't yet get working on my TV.

"Backing up" your movies, eh? :pac:

From what you're saying you should try the one and only:

DVDShrink This lets you rip most DVD's to normal DVD capactiy (4.7GB and below) while retaining near-top qualtiy and allows you to chop out any unwanted sections (different audio languages, menus, copyright screens, etc)

Next up you'll K-lite to play the files (Any program will do but K-lite is the best):
    K-Lite

And for movie cataloging I suggest:
Extreme Movie Manager - it grabs all the data from IMDB.com but you'll have to pay for it (or get a crack :pac:)
