    Hello all
I have a 4year old son (just turned 4) and i was wondering if this was an appropiate age to start him off in any martial arts classes??
    Any feedback appreciated
Im not involved in any classes myself but think maybe bjj or judo would be good grounding for him ..........??

Judo is a great sport. My mates kids do it, and they absolutely love it. It's also a great art for "self-discipline" and conditioning.

I'd advise checking out a few classes in the local area, and seeing how the instructors relate to the children and what the environment is like.

    Whereabouts are you?

Good one in St Vincents School in Glasnevin. Very well established for over 20 years. Kenpo style. Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8 in Gym.

    Richie Moore at www.sbgnorthside.com
    Barry Oglesby at www.ko-martialarts.com

Highly recommended. Fun coaches, and their kids perform very well at competition too.

SWORDS JUDO CLUB is by far the best Martial Arts kiddies club I've seen anywhere.

Richie Moore up at BJJ REVOLUTION run's a fun class for the kids up there too.

OP, both clubs are good. But my experience with children is that they'll find a club which 'clicks' with them and you don't have much say in that, so take the kid to a few clubs.

If Judo takes your fancy there's also Portmarnock Judo Club.

Or there's the Daigokan Judo Club in Le Cheile Community Centre, Donnycarney. Training Times: Tuesday and Thursday, 7.30 - 8.30 Juniors.

Instructors at the Daigokan are John Douglas: 086-6048082
    Donal Tannam: 01-4331721 lovely lads.

You're welcome to drop down for a fee trial week next week. Kids classes are taking a break for August, but will be back in September.

I have a rough guide of 5 being the minimum age, but I have taken 4 year olds who are ready enough to go into a class. I usually give them a little trial run with the folks in attendance and then we decide whether or not it is for them or if they're too young as yet.

To be honest it would be up to you to decide. It's usually plain as day whether or not a kid is ready for it so by viewing the class you'll know as he's your son.
