    different strokes for different folks.

I can't drink sports drinks while running. They upset my stomach. I stick to water. I take glucose tablets with the water though

I used to drink Locozade Sport, but it got too expensive (in terms of frequency of exercise).
Now I buy tubs of PowerBar powder.. On very long runs, I stop off at a garage and refill, with anything they have on hand (PowerAde usually)... On a hot day, after running 16 miles, when you walk out of the petrol station with that nice cold bottle of Powerade, it takes every ounce of willpower, not to finish the drink in one go..

When at home (pre or post run), I just make my own, with water fruit juice (or Robinsons), salt and sugar.

I used isotonic drinks a lot last year in training (both Lucozade Sport and PowerBar powder) - need to be careful not to over-use them though as they are not particularly good for you. Pushed my cholesterol-level up quite a bit, which subsequently fell back when I cut them out.

Whilst they're nice and serve a purpose, I tend to avoid them except after long runs (i.e. 15+ miles). Water is fine on everything else.

less than 2 hours and I don't take anything, more than 2 hours and I'll generally eat something small just before and after the run and take a small bottle of water with me. I'm not very consistent though.

Generally on a long run for the most part I'll just drink water. Sometimes I'll premix a gel (lucozade gels would be the preference here as they don't taste as horrible as some of the others) into the water and take that at some stage. I leave these on my route. I don't like carrying my water as at no stage in a race will I be wearing a camel pack/gel belt or carrying a 500ml bottle around.

For the last 10 weeks before a marathon I won't drink anything on my long runs that I won't have access to in the marathon.

I've started mixing rehydration salts into water with diluted orange. Doesn't taste too bad but I tend to over heat very easily so it keeps me hydrated.

    Hi Stupid_private;

I have the luzocade gels too, did you say you mix the gels with your water?

Anything over an hour an Ill take a Gatorade (although its hard to find) or Powerade.

Im not pushed though if thats not available Lucozade, energize, miwadi with sugar and salt or just plain water.

I use one of these http://www.nathansports.com/our_products/hydration_nutrition/elite_1_plus.html

as I cant stand carrying a water bottle.

I must try some of that high 5 gel you get during the dublin Marathon....anyone know where I could lay my hands on some?

They advise to take the gels with 250ml plus of water or something like that. All gels are in or around the same. If I'm dumping bottles I'll put the gel in with the water rather than taking the gel then trying to drink that much water. Either way should be fine - I just find it easier that way. Although getting closer to marathon time I take them seperately as that's the way I'll have to do it on the day.

    Anyone come across them???

most gels need water with them but there are a couple out there (go that I know of) that are isotonic (or iso something) so you don't need water with them.
