I am looking to buy the aspire one in the following spec
windows XP, 80GB HDD 1GB ram either white or blue (pref white)

I have found them on dabs.ie but have had no luck finding them elsewhere - anyone have any idea as to where else I could buy this from??

Depends on where you are based but you could try the Laptop Shop in St Stephens Green if you are in Dublin or are willing to make a phone call and travel.

Found them on the subnet site. Bought some stuff from them in the past, delivery within 2 to 3 days, depending on time of day when the order is placed.

Not your usual online store - the lads are techies, so they know their stuff. Bought some data comms stuff, patch panels, cat5e modules and the quality was good and cheaper than most places Maplins and even Electrical Wholsalers.

They seem to have two types...

If you want to go have a look at one, they have them in Harvey Norman.

I am trying to buy a laptop at the moment. I finally succeeded today after a lot of hassle. I first tried with laptopsdirect.ie. I had to ring to place my order because I wanted a RAM upgrade. After ten mins of spelling my name, address and billing address phonetically (a for apple) I was informed that they didn't accept laser cards. I asked for a refernece number so my Dad could ring back with his credit card and pay for it. They gave me a 5 digit number, apparently all reference numbers have letters too. So I rang back after my Dad tried, the guy on the other end of the phone didn't want the hassle of dealing with it so in a very condescending manner he informed me that I'd have to ring a different number in the morning. I can only imagine what those people are like to deal with if there is a problem with your order. So then I rang the laptop store (left my number twice nobody got back to me), harvey norman and PCWorld which were no help.

Finally got it sorted with one easy phone call to a knowledgable, helpful friendly man at bms. Got the exact model I wanted ordered in about 3 mins. I can't reccommend them enough. If you want to talk to someone in the country whocknows what they are talking about and actually cares about helping their customer go with bms.

I don't think that's the 80GB xp version though. I remember dunnes were selling them a while ago, don't know if they still have them.

    Quick question:
What do they mean on the laptopsdirect site when they say: 3G No for one of the Acer Aspire One netbooks with Windows XP?
It has WiFi, so does that mean it wouldn't work with a broadband modem?
Thinking of buying one but need to know the answer quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

It will work with a standard broadband wireless connection. Do a search for laptops direct on this forum though, you may decide to buy elsewhere when you read some of the stories.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

What it means is that it doesn't have a built in 3G antenna in which you put in a SIM card and surf the net using the mobile phone networks. You can buy an external one and sign up to a contract with a mobile network if you do want internet access everywhere.

    That's great, thanks guys.
Well, I have ordered from laptopsdirect after all as they were offering the best value of what I wanted. The Linux one would be no good, I reckon, if you want to use a broadband dongle like the one from 3 as it wouldn't be compatible, so I needed one with Windows on it and laptopsdirect were offering the best value for those in Ireland (over 100 euros cheaper than some Irish companies).
I'll let you know how I fare with them.

So yeah, I guess this post was wrong.

Is this true? I bought the linux version as part of a bundle with 3pay broadband in a 3g mobile shop for my brother today. Did they really sell me a bundle thats not compatible?

Heh, whoops. I was actually just presuming that Xandros wouldn't work. I guess it does then, sorry -_-

You could still be right! I havent tried it yet because i dont want my brother to see it. I just really hope your not. The fact that the staff in the shop didn't know much about the netbook is starting to worry me! Guess ill know whether or not it works tomorrow.

Well, I don't know, but according to the 3 website, the dongle only works with Windows XP or Vista or with a Mac. That's why I decided on the XP verion of the netbook. Hope for your sakes that it does work with Linux too. Let us know, will ya?:)

It'll definitely work with Ubuntu, but not sure about other Linux distros.

It works with the acer aspire. You have to use the system update thingey. At the bottom there is an optional update (I can't remember what it's called but it was the only one that wasn't ticked when I was doing it). Tick that one and do the update. It failed for me a few times and took ages (the update server must have been getting a hammering that day) but just keep trying and you'll get it.

Just for people who are still looking to buy an Acer Aspire One, the 512mb 120gb linux model is available on pixmania.ie for €199. Best deal I was able to find when ordering mine

Finally downloaded the updates after 2 days of trying! But still cant connect to internet. On the connection manager thing on the bottom right of the screen it says 3g network is off (there was no 3g network before the update so i think im almost there). Do know how to turn it on? Did you have to do this or did yours just work immediately after the update?

I'm very happy with laptops.ie where I ordered the Acer Aspire One with XP, 1GB memory and a 160 GB harddisk.
When I ordered it Friday before Christmas, they said it would be delivered to me on 23rd December and it was, no problem at all.
Pixmania, on the other hand, messed me around by saying something was in stock and then telling me it wouldn't be available till after Christmas and then it suddenly was available after all. Cancelled my order with them and got the better deal with laptops.ie.

You have to enter the apn settings. I can't really remember how to do it and I don't have the laptop here to check. I'll look for a guide for you.

Sorry, this is the incorrect URL:
What I meant to say was that I've been very happy with www.laptopsdirect.ie.

I quess if laptopsdirect messed us all up they would not be around today. My experience with them was not a good one. I have used pixmania several times flawlessly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 437 ✭✭Lunabu

I used Pixmania on a previous occasion and was happy with them.
This time, however, they messed me around:
laptop was available according to their site, but after I ordered, it showed up as not available till the new year. I cancelled the order but had to wait for the courier as it, strangely enough, had gone out on delivery after all.
Then I received an email saying the delivery would be delayed by up to 2 days and then...it arrived in time on 23rd December.
I refused delivery as I'd ordered the product from laptopsdirect by that time and received the order on 23rd, no probs.
Now I'm waiting to get my money back from Pixmania and they're taking their time.

Yesterday I walked past Beyond 2000, near St. Stephen's Green Centre in Dublin: they have the Aspire One in, I think it was €299.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Not at that price, if it's the old screen size. The new 10inch Acers are in stock at PowerCity, they look nice, one has a sort of brushed steel keyboard and mousepad area. Priced the same as your Acer, but much more useable, with the extra screen size.

I was in for another item, so, didn't pick up on model numbers. PowerCity in Sallynoggin.

    Model: LU.S570B.071 : € 369.95
    ONLINE Price : € 349.60

    Here's a link: http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-30-531845

I'm not a fan of Acer normally, but it was mighty cute.
