Yes it uses FSK, the ETSI standard is ETS300778-1 Option B. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a copy of it online :/

eircom's caller ID is the same as that used by France Telecom, Deutsche Telekom etc and is common across much of continental Europe (and UK cable operators). It's also broadly very similar to (and compatible with) US/Canadian Caller ID too.

The exchange sends the caller ID information as an FSK signal after an initial burst of ringing.

BT uses the same type of FSK data, but it sends it after reversing the line polarity.

Because both standards are used in the UK, many British devices will accept either BT or eircom style caller ID without any fuss. Some older or cheaper devices won't (particularly BT Branded ones)

There are also a few countries in Europe which adopted caller ID much earlier than the rest of the world and send the information as a burst of DTMF (touchtone) signals. This is mostly found in Scandinavia and the Netherlands.

Also, it should be noted that most Caller ID phones / devices will accept ALL of the common Caller ID standards. Eircom's is by far the most widespread, so in general you'll face no problems finding equipment that's compatible.
