Is Stuart Williams the best at landing a punt?

Aldermoor easily landed a hefty gamble under Daniel Tudhope in the Yorkshire Radio Maiden Stakes at Catterick.

The Stuart Williams-trained youngster was backed at 25-1 in the morning exchanges and was a 6-1 chance on course at the off.

And he never gave his supporters an anxious moment, travelling well for Tudhope who sent him past the favourite Starry Sky inside the final furlong to score by a length with any amount to spare.

Williams said: "He had been going well enough at home to come to Catterick (for his debut), but with all respect to Catterick he would not have gone to Newmarket or Royal Ascot for his first run.

"My horses have not been in good form, there has been a lot of coughing around the town (Newmarket)."

He went on: "He was bought at the Doncaster Breeze-Up and they usually know what to expect, but it had been soft old ground at Doncaster so we backed off him a bit and that is why he has not run until now."

There was the Exponential gamble a few years ago at Lingfield (backed from 100's down to 9's) , The Baroness (66-1 to 12-1 winner at Lingfield a year or so prior to that) and I can recall Greenback landing a touch on the aw backed from 20's. It seems that every so often he lays one out and unlike some of the gambling stables (Curley etc.) he is able to lure the bookies into offering inflated odds about the gamble as opposed to revealing his hand early in the betting exchanges and being at the mercy of a short opening price.

Well done to all concerned today
