Some butterfly shots I took recently at an exhibit at the natural History Museum in London. All shots were taken handheld with Canon 400D and the 100mm f2.8. Had to keep the ISO high as flash wasnt allowed and most of the shots were taken wide open hence the narrow DoF.

    Any comments appreciated..cheers

    +1

I think the 3rd picture is the best. Although the colours in the others are still great. Were the butterflies alive and were they behind glass or something?

they were alive and flying around in front of me...kept in a kind of greenhouse attachment to the natural hist museum. quite hot and humid in there. most of them were pretty good subjects though...staying still for long periods at a time and not at all afraid of people.

    Nice.
#3 for me too, would've liked all of the Butterfly in #2.
    Lovely eyes they have.

#3 to me is a nice shot, however I love the detail in #2. I think that whilst I probably would have liked to see the rest of the butterfly in this shot you'd loose the point of focus.

Damn, I'm sorry I didn't go to see this when I was at the NHM a couple of months ago.

    Sorry your correct. Straffan.
A bit out of the way but it is sign posted in the town.
Be prepared for a very hot photo shoot...Hot!

havent been out to Straffan...but yeah the butterfly house in London was really hot and humid...means the butterflies don't fly about too much / die though which is good for shots. you might find your lens fogging up at the very start when you go in but it usually clears after a few minute -t
