Pier Pasolini's much reviled and oft banned final movie Salo,or the 120 days of Salo is finally getting its much anticipated re release through the Criterion label on August 12th.Below are 2 links where its available for pre order, either directly from the Criterion website or through cdwow. Not sure about the Criterion site(shipping outside the US,costs etc) so I will be pre ordering from cdwow in the next week or so.Having only seen snippets of this movie down the years I am pretty damn excited to see it in its fully uncut form and the host of extras that are on the 2 disc set.Ive heard all the hype about it so Im looking forward to being able to pass judgement on it myself.
    Enjoy.
    :)

Hmmm, while I'm pleased to hear this, I certainly wont be buying it.

    Any particular reason why?
    Have you seen it?

Well the BFI release has been available for a good while now! though to be honest a pretty poor/average film and certainly not worth the harowing scenes.

Because I dont really wanna spend a big wad of cash on a film that I'll watch once and say "Hmm, that was nasty", then banish to the cupboard.

im sure its a nice family orientated movie that allows for healthy discussion & multiple re-watching...

Definitely a curio that I've been meaning to watch. Our local librarian has had the only known copy in the area for some time and has been lending it out to curious patrons. Whether I'd want to spend money on it, I dunno, but must watch it at some point.

Watched this a few years ago and certainly didn't feel that it was worthy of all the hype. Critically acclaimed it may be but a film you will re-watch or enjoy watching the first time round I doubt. I'm one of those people though that once I get the idea to watch a film I go to the ends of the earth to see it. I found actually visiting the town of Salo after seeing this on a holiday in Italy quite strange thinking back on the film. Beautiful town but see it if you have to. I wouldn't recommend it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Yeah. It's really not a very good film.

I think I've seen a good few Pasolini films actually.. they've all been terrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Thats all this movie is really.

I had read so much about it, about the hype and how it was banned etc, so I had to check it out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Ive read all about it too. There are a ridiculous amount of people that sat down and thought this was a horror movie but its soooooo not.I have absolutely no expectations for it.As was mentioned by johnny ultimate, its a movie Ive waited years to see, mostly out of curiosity.I really wish I didnt know ANYTHING about it but thats what I get for seeking information on it.
As for buying it,meh, the majority of movies Ive bought were blind buys, and quite a few of them cost a damn sight more than €26 so it wont bother me even if I end up thinking the movie is total bullspit.Im especially interested in the documentaries.Plus its a Criterion release so that just adds extra nerd factor to it.
I am looking forward to seeing the poop eating scenes I must admit(not in any fetishistic way)Im wondering will I be grossed out despite the fact I know the poop is just chocolate with marmalade mixed in to make it look nuttier

It's been screened a few times in Dublin over the years - IFC showed it.
Someone should transcribe the script and post if off to the Film Bored for funding!

When I read this bit it's obvious that you need to see some swap.avi style porn!

Salo is no more artistic than them "fetish films" produced in South America*.

    *in my opinion

No 'Salo' I'm afraid but here's a link to a website selling R1 Criterion dvds at buy one, get one free.

Weak dollar should help you find a few bargains.

I used to be interested in these "controversial , banned" films before that were about "art" . After having seen a few of them ("In the realm of the senses" being one of them) I think that it's mainly hype to be honest and that usually today , films that are described like Salo is , then it's nothing more than hype and utter hype and rubbish really.

Maybe that;s just me and my weird opinion. But for your information the internet is full of videos of women and men eating (consuming?) human faeces. Search for 2girls1cup and swap.avi

Seriously. Watch the clip I posted. That's the film in a nut shell... it's terrible.. all his films seem to be just bad excuses for softcore porn... this one just has some lame political agenda attached onto it.

Watched about half of Salo one awhile back and it just bored me. Nothing but soft core porn trying to pass it's self off as art.

Having endured a number of Pasolini films I came to the conclusion that he was nothing more than a porn director with delusions of grandeur.

Scat porn and all that kind of stuff has no interest for me.Ive seen 2 girls 1 cup and it made me feel like puking.Stuff like that is f##ked up and people that are into it are,IMHO,freaks.
Its nothing to do with me getting my jollies and I dont know how my previous posts could lead you to that conclusion.
I said I wonder would I be disgusted by particular scenes given the fact I know what the poop is made of-maybe that makes me a deviant but I really dont see how.
Salo is a movie that people hate or love.As Ive said,Ive never seen it in its entirety so I cant pass judgement but its a movie that Ive wanted to see for a long time, out of curiosity more than anything.I agree that nowadays most movies are hype and no substance, and Pasolini was a master of this.It still doesnt change the fact I want to see it and will buy it,if for no other reason to see what all the fuss was/is about.

I've bought a few of the "video nasties" and they've usually turned out to be just rubbish! Last House on the Left and In the Realm of the senses springing to mind.

Have you seen The Gospel According To Saint Matthew? I thought it was very moving and beautifully made. It's not at all like Salo. (The scene with the loaves, fishes and turds thankfully didn't make it into the final cut.)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭Nolanger

That was a really good movie - was on RTE a few years ago at Easter.
Pasolini was a non-believer but he made a better religious movie than Mel Gibson!

Havnt seen in the Realm of the Senses but I love Last House on the Left.Where did you buy it?Its only available uncut if you import it.The version Anchor Bay released in the UK and Ireland has something in the region of 8 minutes cut from it.The unrated version is the only way to go.Ive seen both and the cut version is horrible.

I really like Last House on the LEft, the banjo soundtrack is absolutly brilliant and the remake is shaping up quite nicely too.

I've only seen the so called "cut" version released by AnchorBay. I could care less really! I'm not going to chase down a different version of a movie just because there's some extra stabbing and pissing and a bit more tit

Remake, errrrrrrrrr, not feeling it at all.The reason LHOTL worked for me was because it is so downright sleazy, its the epitome of what an exploitation movie should be/is.Plus the David Hess theme song thats played about 10 times throughout the movie,so bad its good. There is no way,and I mean NO way a remake could capture that. Its from a totally different era and a remake is just going to be another in the endless slew of the "torture porn" (jesus I hate that term) genre.Original good, remake bad.

Altogether now "and the rooooooad, leeeeeeads to nowhere"

I've read reviews and seen clips and I've this really nasty film built up in my head, but it was the same for A Clockwork Orange and when I finally saw that... well the puke bucket I had to hand wasn't actually needed. Ditto Straw Dogs.

Seriously, times change. What's horrific at one stage is unlikely to be so 30 years later.

My dad was telling me that when Dracula (the Christopher Lee one) was shown at his local cinema in the 50s, people were fainting, running out of the cinema, crying, being sick... he was no doubt exaggerating, but I'm sure he meant there was a fair bit of upset. Today we'd just laugh at the campness of it all.

Pasolini films seem extremely pretentious. I watched some of Teorema (purely for Terence Stamp :o) and it was absolute ****. Stamp wasn't even that hot in it

My copy of this finally arrived today.Actually 2 did.Funny story.

About 3 months ago I ordered the Salo Criterion release from CDWOW.It hadnt arrived after 5 or 6 weeks so I emailed customer service and they reckoned it must have gotten lost in the post.
4 and a half weeks ago I got a mail from them telling me that a replacement item had been shipped and that I would have it within 10 working days.Neither item had arrived yesterday so I mailed customer care again. They replied today to apologise profusely and told me its company policy that they cannot send out a 3rd replacement so they credited my paypal account for the full amount-€40.
I decided that was a satisfactory outcome and thought nothing more of it.
When I arrived home today what was waiting for me,not 1 but 2 shiny new Salo Criterion editions. So I got 2 double disc releases of this for free.Yippee.First time anything like this ever happened.Made my day and CDWOW definitly scored major brownie points with me.

Anyway, back on topic.Going to watch this over the weekend and will give an opinion afterwards.

BTW the release is gorgeous.Definitly the best Ive ever seen from Criterion. For me the nerd factor with this is through the roof.Awesome extras and an 80 page booklet.Movie geek heaven.

But did you actually think the film was any good?

As I said above,I hope to get to watch it over the weekend.Im not going in with any expectations. Its just me being a film geek that has to have movies like this in my collection.Whether I think its good or bad, this is still a landmark movie that has reached urban legend status. There are a few DVDs I have that I thought were total crap - Nekromantik 2 springs to mind - but I would never get rid of them. Its just the completist in me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Watched this last night.I dont think Salo is the kind of movie you could enjoy per se but I did think it was a good movie.Does it deserve the glowing praise some quarters laud on it?,debatable IMO.Is it a movie that deserves its noteriety?
Arguably yes but thats if you take it at face value. The scenes of
    rape,sodomy,torture,coprophilia and murder
while surely uncomfortable viewing for some, are an intrinsic part of the movie and what Pasolini was trying to illustrate. We have to remember that the source material is partly based on the writings of arguably the most deviant mind ever to put pen (or quill) to paper.I would recommend it to people that appreciate something different,a little bit artsy and that dont need explosions or a love interest to warrant watching a movie. Its certainly not for everyone though.I will watch it again in a few months however.

From your post about the Dark Knight Blueray pic quality thread:

You are just been pedantic.I could start a thread about the new criterion release of Salo, and about the transfer of the new release of Salo, and about the extras on,you guessed it,the new release of Salo.By your logic I(or anyone) could start multiple threads about essentially the same thing.

If its not about the movie then this should be in the technology section.

Whatever anyway, let KH or one of the other mods decide.

i like Criterion, they always release contiversial or out of print movies, they relreleased idi amin the autopotrait at the time, they are also planning to rerelease "missing",and 1982 film, the intrest part of it is that it was banned during pinochets regime

I commented in the Dark Knight Blueray pic quality thread because a 3rd thread was started for the same thing(Batman DVD) which I feel was totally unneccessary.
Did I start a new thread about the transfer/packaging or whatever about Salo,no,I didnt.I commented in the original thread I started cos it was related to the dvd release.

I assume you mean half the country downloads them? Legally or illegally? Much as nedtheshed and meself have sparred (Dammmmmn him) I think he both agree that films should be acquired legally. I know the temptation is there to get a movie online and bugger that if I can get it for free. However, and I know this is OT but I honestly believe that we should pay for a movie that we wish to see. I don't agree with people who say "Ah sher, it's only a few downloading films. And sher I wasn't going to see it in the cinema anyway so they won't loose me money anyway"

If you are curious enough to download a movie, copy it to media, sit down and watch it then it is your duty to pay for watching it. the OP was on about Salo. Not a film I wish to watch. However, if it WAS a film I wished to watch then I would purchase it or at least rent it.

If I wished to have a film on DVD/Video/blueray/whatever I always purchase it.

Use it? Pay for it........ Like everything else

i agree to that too, just i laugh when people dont think they their isp can watch what they download or companies can set up fake torrents to snare you into their trap, then they wonder how they get caught,i even knew people who would be stupid enough to leave evidence on their comps when bringing it in for repair!
