I'm looking for an ultra portable laptop, and am considering one of Sony Vaio TZ series. Yes, expensive, but nice design and very light to carry about. This is the kind of spec available:

    Intel® Centrino® processor technology with Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor U7700 (1.33 GHz and 533 MHz FSB) and Intel® PRO/Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n
Genuine Windows Vista® Business (English version)
120 GB (Ultra ATA / 4200 rpm) hard disk drive
    2 GB DDR2-533-SDRAM (1 x 2048 MB), maximum 2 GB DDR2-533-SDRAM
    11.1" WXGA (1366 x 768) X-black LCD with LED technology
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with Total Available Graphics Memory of 256 MB
    DVD±RW/±R DL/RAM drive
    etc...

Now, I'm worried is this spec powerful enough to run Vista ? Or would it be very slow ?
I will be using it for basic MS Office, iTunes, surfing, and recording off my USB turntable using Audacity. Noting too taxing, but I would still like the OS to run fast.

Anyone with any opinions or anyone who acutally owns one, would like to hear from you !

I'm also tempted to go for a bit more bulk and get a Dell XPS M1330, but am seeing alot of negativity about these on here.

    thanks,
    DB

Personally I'd want a bigger screen. I've got a Vaio FZ21M - it's got 15" screen. It came with Vista but never ran well on it - the fan was always on full blast and it got really hot - so I use Ubuntu Linux on it now and it runs sweet.

actually i have a sdlightly lower spec of this one, its only 1.06ghz dual core. i have the 2gb of ram and it runs vista fine. the real bottlenecki find is the harddrive which is 4200rpm. but in general i find it fine for vista. its not slow to the point that you want to throw it away anyway.

i bought mine in japan, where they are much much cheaper, and its more entertaining when you buy from them, they get very excited :D

You would be mad not to at least have a look at a 10" screened Advent (yes I know theyre normally as dull as ditch water-not this baby!)4211 available right now for 379 euro in PC World (Blanchardstown for sure has stock). The whole 'netbook' scene is exploding right now.The ASUS EEE started the trend and there are now offerings from Advent and Acer also with Dell ,Sony and a host of others trying to release models asap. You 'loose out' on your DVD drive(theres a 12" Advent with a DVD and Vista but its not really a 'netbook') but apart from that they make a mockery of traditional laptops for 80% of users. You can choose from anything from a raw ASUS EEE 2G Surf at 214 euro in elara.ie to an all singing ,all dancing XP model with big hard drive and lots of RAM for around 500 euro .
I have just sold my wifes 1600 euro Sony Vaio 13.3 " screen 'business' laptop ...Good Riddance ,the thing was crippled with Vista .She ADORES her new 'baby laptop' and is clutching it like a new baby -which considering she HAS a new baby (well 2 month old God bless her!) is really saying something!!!

thanks for the feedback all... In the end I went for a Dell XPS M1330. The ultra portables are just too low spec at the moment, especially for running Vista.
So I've sacrificed portability for power. I'm happy enough with my XPS, though I thought it would be a bit more light weight - probably due to the 9 cell battery. I think I'll invest in a 6 cell for when I'm travelling.
