Batman star Christian Bale has been arrested by detectives investigating claims he assaulted his mother and sister.
His arrest comes just a day after the British actor attended the premiere of his new film, The Dark Knight, in London.
Bale, 34, is alleged to have lashed out at the two family members in his suite at Park Lane's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.
The star, who plays the Caped Crusader, is being questioned at a central London police station, sources say.
The two women, who live in Dorset, went to a Hampshire police station yesterday to make a formal allegation.
The complaint about the actor was then passed to the Metropolitan Police for further investigation.
A police spokeswoman said: "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment.
"He was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody."
Bale had joined Batman co-stars Sir Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart at the Odeon West End cinema in Leicester Square last night.
Sky's showbiz correspondent Steve Hargrave interviewed Bale at a London hotel yesterday and later at the premiere.
He said there was nothing in his demeanour to suggest he had been involved in an alleged family row.
Hargrave said: "He (Bale) wasn't the most overtly cheery but he wasn't particularly rude to me when I sat down in the Dorchester to interview him.
"Maybe he sounded a bit abrupt on some answers."
The Dark Knight, which also stars the late Heath Ledger as The Joker, broke box office records when it opened in the US at the weekend.
The 28-year-old, who is tipped for a posthumous Oscar, died from an accidental drugs overdose in January.
Bale, a keen environmental activist and martial arts enthusiast, also starred in American Psycho, Empire Of The Sun and Batman Begins.

It must be a dark night for Bale now

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/wenn/20080723/ten-bale-arrest-dubbed-a-family-situatio-c60bd6d.html
Christian Bale's mother and sister have spoken out about their reported fight with the actor, calling it a "family situation".

The Batman star, 34, was arrested on Tuesday over allegations he attacked his mother Jenny, 61, and sister Sharon, 40, at the Dorchester Hotel on Sunday night - as he prepared for new movie The Dark Knight's London premiere on Monday.
After he was released on bail, the actor issued a statement denying the assault, prompting Jenny and Sharon to speak out, confirming to the Daily Telegraph newspaper that an "incident" did take place.
Sharon says, "There was an incident but the police are dealing with it. It is an extremely sensitive situation. There is nothing more I can say."
Jenny, a former circus performer, adds, "Yes I was there and yes there was a family situation but the police are handling it and I cannot say any more at the moment. We didn't call the police to the scene."
Sources tell the newspaper the incident was over a long-running family dispute.

Bale, who left his mother's home in Wales as a teenager to live with his environmental activist dad in Los Angeles, is due to return to London to face possible charges in September.
In a statement issued after he left London's Belgravia police station on Tuesday, Bale's spokesperson said, "Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister.
"Mr Bale, who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, and left the station without any charge being made against him by police."

    Its a family affair

Allegedly, his sister wanted him to lend her a couple of hundred thousand, the verbal abuse about he and his wife starting just after he refused.

Could be a stunt to divert attention back onto him and away from Heath Ledger.

I'd say he was researching a new role and just got a little too 'method',as he is prone to do.
