I've gotten away with having bags that certainly wouldn't fit in the little frame that they have standing around the check-in area - I get the feeling that as long as it looks like a carry on bag, you're generally grand.

If you are flying from any on the english airports, they will make you check your bags. They are a lot stricter over there. The staff wouldn't let me through with a carry on bag and my small handbag!

Not any of them, but I have heard that Stanstead are a bit anal about the bag sizes and rules.

You'll be fine with that bag out of Dublin, and probably fine out of a lot of other airports. Ryanair certainly won't care, but their third party checkin staff can sometimes be a bit OTT on the rules and the airports "security" staff can also in some places.

Ryanair are starting to apply the carry-on bag rules more strictly. The following was posted on their website on July 11th.

Check in on-line and nobody passes any heed until you get on the plane,

the overhead lockers in the middle of the plane are a little bigger than at the front (possibly the back too not sure though).
